EDC Wallet Dilemma

I have an odd first world problem. :slightly_smiling_face: Simply put, I can’t decide if I want to continue using the MagSafe wallet or carry a separate small wallet that will hold more cards and cash. As I see it, here are the pros and cons of the two options:

MagSafe Wallet Pros

  • I can carry three cards (Two credit cards and Drivers License. I can’t have more because the Apple Card is thick.
  • I don’t have to carry a small wallet in my pocket.
  • I don’t risk losing other cards and IDs if I lose the phone or MagSafe wallet. Other cards and IDs will be in a separate wallet.-

MagSafe Wallet Cons

  • I don’t have important cards in the MagSafe Wallet, e.g., medical insurance cards and the like. My fear is I’ll leave the house for a doctor’s appointment and forget to grab the other wallet.
  • I can’t carry cash unless I use a money clip. I seldom use cash, but on accession it can be important to have.

Small Wallet Pros

  • I have everything with me, all cards, IDs, and some cash.
  • The phone is thinner and lighter without the MagSafe Wallet and the phone lays flatter.
  • I can use my SUV’s wireless charging without the need to remove the MagSafe Wallet and run the risk of misplacing it. -

Small Wallet Cons

  • I now have three things in my pockets: phone, keys, wallet. The small wallet is not large.
  • If I lose the wallet, I lose everything (I should note that I have an AirTag in the wallet).

Below is an image of my phone, MageSafe Wallet, and the small wallet.

What do you do and what do you recommend?

I tried the MagSafe wallet lifestyle for awhile and it just doesn’t hold enough. I need a badge to get into my office. I have to have a keycard backup for the Tesla (sometimes the iPhone key stops working). As you mentioned a health insurance card. We haven’t even talked about drivers license and credit cards yet. So I’m back to a regular wallet. I occasionally will use the MagSafe wallet if I’m going on a walk with my dogs or something like that, but most of the time it’s the regular wallet.

Some years before MagSafe I tried a card case attached to my phone, but it didn’t carry enough. Today I carry a small front pocket wallet containing my driver’s license, 3 credit cards, medicare, HSA, and 3 $20’s.

I tried a MagSafe, but even with just 3 cards it made my iPhone way too bulky.

Since I “never” use cash I don’t really need a wallet, but I do need something to carry a few cards (identity, credit, bank, insurance, and public transport). I decided to go for a (cheap) minimal wallet (holding those cards - plus a euro biljet that’s in there since day one) and am pretty happy with it.

I am using Ridge Wallet, great wallet, and they have a magsafe version

I’m hoping @Bmosbacker will ‘solve’ this conundrum via a proper small-wallet spirit-quest…

I have a folding wallet. Beyond needing to carry some coins for the occasional parking need, I can put a fair few cards into it (usually at least 5), including a Chipolo Airtag substitute.
Carry some paper cash also, and keep receipts I need (e.g. expenses for work)

I tried a few mini wallets, but went back to a full one.

When I carry a wallet, it’s this:

I got this in 2021, which replaced the 21-year-old wallet I previously had. (Mine is the previous version without a magnetic closure.)

I considered a MagSafe option… for about 1 minute.

An option not mentioned is to use a small bag. Holds everything you need and saves you from keeping stuff in pockets. Yep, I am suggesting the Man Purse.

I use a Flipside Wallet.

On my second one in probably 10 years. I briefly used the Peak Design wallet, but didn’t end up using it as a MagSafe wallet and got fed up of all my card coming out at once, so got myself the new Flipside, even though the old one was still working.

Such abuse! Well, while on this spirit quest I had a vision…. Those who have watched Star Trek Voyager will get it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I also tried the magsafe wallet lifestyle and it just didn’t stick for me. It made my phone bulkier in my pocket and then I still had 3 other pockets available, two if I have my car keys, one if I have my work phone. Which means I was adding bulk to one pocket in order to leave another empty…just didn’t make sense to me.

Wallet cases and magsafe wallets never appealed to me. I want my phone and wallet to each do its own things well, without having to drag the other along for the ride.

I’ve seen this liked before, but this time it’s grabbed me. Might be getting one of these soon. How is the bonding holding up after three years?

I carry a purse. Problem solved.

Honestly, this is the right answer. It was so nice having my sling when we were in London for Relay 10. Turns out I can carry everything I need including my Kindle!

“Like new” might be an exaggeration, but it’s held up quite well. I’m not so great a review videos, but here’s what I have. Let me know if you want to see something more.

Personally, I’m very happy with my MagSafe wallet on the back of my phone. It fits perfectly on the iPhone 13 mini. With only two cards (Apple Card, driving license), the combo is very light in my pocket.

To get down to just two cards, I moved everything I could into Apple Wallet (other credit cards, health insurance, AAA, vaccination records, a Clipper transit card when I lived in San Francisco).

I still need a few physical cards (ATM, physical alternate credit card, HSA card, etc.), and those go into a secondary (also very slim) wallet, along with whatever cash I feel like carrying at the time. (I like to tip in cash when I go out, always appreciated by service staff.) I take the secondary wallet only on occasions when I’m going somewhere I need those other things; otherwise, the MagSafe wallet + Apple Wallet app are sufficient for most daily running around.

I don’t carry club cards, a gym card, or anything where a photo of the card or an Apple Wallet entry will suffice. My car uses a fat key fob, and I routinely carry only one other key, to my house. (I saw “Sex, Lies, & Videotape” at an impressionable age. ;- )

The difference, for me, is context. When I’m at home, I probably only have my phone in my pocket. For “normal” leaving the house, I add the MagSafe wallet and my keys. For going out, or if I’m just uncertain, I also add the secondary wallet. I take the “layers” that make sense, based on the context I’m planning to be in. With the goal of carrying the least amount of things necessary for whatever I’m about at the time.
