For me the with ProtonPass it works well but the lack of biometrics on the macOS app is frustrating.
They’ve introduced a separate password for Proton Pass which helps.
I’ve replaced SurfShark with ProtonVPN and find it works much better for me - not least because you can use it over port 443 which helps as hospitals in the UK block the normal VPN ports.
I’ve been using Protonmail since the beta and an early customer who was upgraded to unlimited for the same price I was paying for just the mail service. To date their customers are locked into the price plan at the time of subscription and shielded from future price increases.
Protonmail + Simplelogin (which is included w/ unlimited) is excellent. If using your own domain(s) it may be better to set them up with Simplelogin for unlimited email aliases.
Proton VPN is outstanding, just as good as IVPN which I had used previously for years.
Proton Pass is very good, I’ve been running it alongside Bitwarden & still prefer Bitwarden due to one small thing, the ability to fill in login credentials with a single keystroke.
Proton Drive is reliable, but not as well integrated as iCloud Drive on Mac or iDevices. Proton recently added automatic background photo backup from the iphone photos app.
The only thing keeping me from switching to Proton Calendar is the lack of an iPad app. For the time being my calendars are hosted with Fastmail.
Proton contacts do not sync with phone contacts on the iPhone, although this feature is apparently being worked on.
All in all I’m very happy with Proton’s suite and was even more pleased with the recent announcement regarding their transition to a nonprofit structure.
I love everything they are doing and have been an off and on customer for while but finally pulled the trigger and paid for 2 years.
The mail Bridge for Apple Mail is much more stable than it has been in the past and their macOS Mail app is wonderful if you choose that route, which is what finally sold me to go all in this time.
The VPN is fast and stable for me although I have issues from time to time on my work WiFi with it not letting me connect to the internet unless I turn off the VPN.
I have my Proton Calendars shared with Apples Calendar app and that has also been much more stable. I haven’t had an issue with missing events.
If you are looking to store your photos and use Proton Drive, which isn’t working on the macOS dev beta (learned that the hard way), you’ll probably need a family, business, or visionary plan since you only get 500 gb of storage on a regular plan with no way yo upgrade the storage amount.
I have been very happy with Proton mail and think their vision for the future is a good one. I can’t wait to see what more they do with their Standard Notes acquisition and will be excited for any AI or browser products they introduce, it’s only a matter of time in my opinion.
You have to use their iOS app, as other apps do not support the encryption, connecting to Proton’s servers (Proton does not use IMAP and SMTP protocols to receive and send email), and other Proton features.
