Does Flexibits usually do a BF discount for their products? Asking because I am in the market for a calendar app, specifically Fantastical, after trying out Busycal which is included in my setapp sub, and BF is just one month away so I might as well just wait.
I think those previous sales were only for the first year and not recurring. So after a year you’d be back up to full price.
Hmm, I wonder what I have to lose if I use a throwaway account and just import / export settings every BF.
Gruber had a discount code on his blog a while back of 20% off. I have renewed Fantastical once under that discount but it is still showing for my next billing. You could try searching for that to see if it is still applicable.
Yeah, I got the education discount for 20% off but I saw that BF discount is 50% and it’s just a month away so…
Might just be me being paranoid, but I have to believe that eventually it would get detected.
Things like this really have to come down to the value provided. If it is somehow indispensable to your workflow, it’s probably worth what they are charging. If you are not currently using it, though, I would consider whether or not you can make another app do whatever you think you need Fantastical for.
Think of “not having to buy it” kind of like a 100% off coupon.
What is the specific use case you are trying to accomplish?
It’s just an idea. Time comes and I’ll just be lazy and renew it. But is it against the TOS anyways?

Recently got into time tracking and time blocking - aka planning out my life to not have to ask the question, “where the hell does time keep going?”
The Apple Calendar app is pretty good but I wanted something more out of it so I am looking for other apps - already tested BusyCal as it’s included in my setapp sub but I really dislike that the events do not really respond to the window resizing. So if an event starts right after another, at a glance it makes it look like they happened around the same time. But maybe I am dumb, haha, I checked but there’s no way to change that.
I have been eyeing Fantastical since May this year but I wasn’t super into calendars then so I didn’t pay much heed to it. Now after having tried it, it feels like it has incredible polish and works really well on iOS too. Currently using the free version without an account.
If it’s an offer for first time customers, and you are not a first-time customer, I don’t think the exact wording of theTOS is the issue. They would logically be within their rights to cancel your license.
Your reasoning makes sense for why you might want Fantastical versus other options. I used to use BusyCal, but that was to solve a problem that I no longer have. I am back on the Apple calendar.
I also wrote a surface-level (one week use) comparison here if you are interested btw: BusyCal vs Fantastical
If you’re into time blocking have you considered Noteplan? It’s also a subscription but it does more than just calendars.
I have. The thing is my entire website (https://kayg.org) runs off of Obsidian so I can’t really switch from it, and I don’t really see the point in having two note taking apps. I have also tried to use them both simultaneously but sadly Noteplan does not support some of the markdown syntax that Obsidian does like: Internal Links to a Specific Heading
