Fastmail Domain with Wordpress.com

I’ve been using Blot.im to host my blog for a year or two. It’s worked fairly well, but I’ve found the Obsidian back end to be tedious. Getting the titles right, the formatting, how to get the page to display properly; it’s been a bit frustrating at times. I’ve also read some things lately mentioning the person who runs Blot. I guess he’s basically vanished and stopped responding to support requests?

I realize Wordpress gets a lot of heat and I get it, I’ve used it before. But I just want a place to go where I can quickly write a post and move on.

I signed up for a year and have my domain purchased through Fastmail. I just can’t for the life of me figure out how to get things setup so when you type my domain name (e.g. www.JoeyJoeJoeJuniorShabadoo) you go to my Wordpress blog.

The instructions on the Wordpress site are as follows:

But there is nothing in the Fastmail settings that says “Name Server”. I ended up adding an “NS” (Name Server??) entry on the fastmail side, but it’s not working.

I emailed Fastmail and their response was “oh yeah, no problem. Just go to the domain settings and do what the Wordpress instructions say, change the name servers”.

I’ve emailed them to follow up, but I thought I’d check with the brain power on here as well. Might be a faster, more “my language” response to the issue.

In Fastmail, go to Settings, then choose All Settings and Domains. Add Domain (your domain name), then you should see a settings page including the NS setting

Do not, do not, do not update your name servers. That will break your email.

Look into the WordPress settings and see if there is a way to set an A record, and a WWW record to point to them. Then figure out how to do that at Fastmail.

These are likely the directions you need:

@AppleGuy, just seconding webwalrus’ post, it’s really easy to break your DNS settings (and thus your email) changing nameservers.

Just hopped on a Zoom with @webwalrus and did a screen share. He had me up and running in 15 mins.

Thanks Mr W.W.!

Also, I think it speaks to the fact that this forum is a great community of folks.

For anyone wondering, I have a domain registration with WP.Com pointing to a website hosted on WP.Com with email in iCloud+.
