Favorite general technology podcasts?

For years, I’ve been an avid listener of The Vergecast - it was my go-to for general technology news, and I generally really enjoyed their perspective on technology. However, over the years, they’ve been shedding hosts I enjoyed (first Paul Miller, then Dieter Bohn) and replacing them with hosts I find pretty cringe. Nowadays, I struggle to get through an entire episode.

Any recommendations on general technology podcasts?

If you’re just trying to stay up-to-date on the high points of Mac news, I like 9to5Mac Daily. I used to listen to macOS Ken all the time, but I seem to recall him spending a fair bit of time on Apple earnings and stock-type stuff, which I had no interest whatsoever in. I enjoyed listening to him - just not always the topic.

I like Focused, MPU and Accidental Tech. Though I began to notice Marco says “y’know” a lot. It’s starting to get to me. Once I pick up on something like that, I can’t shake it.

NY Times podcasts are rife with “sort of” and “kind of”.

“Did you – sort of – get a sense that he was doing that? It’s sort of - my thought as well”.

I digress.

Oh, no. Now you’ve planted the seed and have me fearing the next episode. :face_with_peeking_eye:

I kind of get what you’re saying, y’know?

I like ATP, but it’s too long!

Have you heard of the good news of Connected?

I’m a member of Toastmasters, and we actually have a role in meetings that listens for “ah”, “um”, and other filler words. I tell people that after you do that a few times you’ll never be able to watch C-SPAN ever again.

Reminds me of this:

MPU, of course
Accidental Tech Podcast
Core Intuition
Decoder with Nilay Patel (I only listen to that one occasionally).
Dithering
Hard Fork
Macsparky Labs Report
Macstories Unwind
The Talk Show With John Gruber

Not a tech podcast, but the Ezra Klein Show has done great work on AI.

I enjoy the WVFRM podcast from MKBHD and company. Beyond what others have already mentioned, I don’t think there’s too many other good general technology podcasts. Some non-tech podcasts I enjoy that touch on technology quite a bit:

The Ezra Klein Show (business/politics/philosophy)
Deep Questions with Cal Newport (productivity and work culture)
Freakonomics Radio (economics/business)
Decoder with Nilay Patel (business/technology)
How I Built This with Guy Raz (founder stories)
Into The Aether (video games)
Triple Click (video games/business)
Downstream (streaming media/business)

This may veer us slightly off topic, but I find tech podcasts are best served in smaller doses. For me anyway. I just mean I find it more enjoyable to pick 2-3 I really like and stick with those, as anything beyond that just leads to repetition. I’ve tried “The Talk Show” with John Gruber a few times, but since I’m already an ATP listener (prob my favourite podcast), I don’t really have the bandwidth for another 2 hour podcast that covers a lot of the same ground.

I know this is the nature of the business too, but all the cross promotion and similarities can create a lot of overlap in the podcast space. How many times can I hear about the Vision Pro or the new iPhone without getting tired of it?

I was thinking recently that some entirely fresh voices and points of view in the space would be good. It seems like everyone I listen to is well established and they all know one another, so the lines bleed together between shows a lot. I’d love a fresh take on the Apple universe, something different.

It’s like when you turn on a tech channel on YouTube, they’re all the same now.

Many look the same and promote the same messages, and I think podcasts have fallen into that too.

It’s not long enough. I could listen to another hour.

I’m a regular listener but frequently use the chapters and fast forward to “edit” the episode.

I couldn’t listen to The Talk Show without chapter select. I don’t have a totally consistent approach but here’s what I ended up hearing in the three most recent episodes.

If I’m going to listen to everything, it needs to be short, like the 8-9 minute news episodes on The Changelog or how WSJ or NYT do daily briefs. (I set episodes like these to start 30-60 seconds in.)

Or, it needs to be something I value for the entertainment (like Connected or ATP, though I skip chapters on those, too) or a new-to-me type of voice/perspective/industry I am currently absorbing.

These aren’t hard or consistent rules; they just evolved in response to time pressure and noticing myself lose attention.

Agreed. And the podcasts that don’t use chapters but put the times in their show notes; that’s no good.

I can’t listen to Cal Newport’s show because of this. Put in chapters man. I’m not manually reading and skipping to the parts I want to hear.

And even though Castro went dark and even though they don’t communicate/update, that chapter pre selection is a CONSTANT temptation. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Cal’s has them. I’m not sure when that started, maybe when he hired an in-studio producer. It really helps.

Yep. It baffles me that other clients don’t do it.

Pardon me if you answered this already, but what podcast app do you use? Does it let you select chapters in advance before you start listening to the podcast?

Castro; yes, it does. Usually you just jump in and uncheck 'em when you notice it’s started playing the next podcast (or when you hear something you’d rather not.) It’d be nice to be able to open one in the queue and uncheck in advance of playing.

You are tempting me to change podcast players again. I have done too much of that in my life!

Haha. Put that energy into encouraging Marco and Automattic to add chapter skip.
