Favorites and a question unanswered since Monterrey

I’ve sought an answer to this in a number of places for years. It is, so far, unanswerable. It’s also not a big deal, but my curiosity remains.

Open a file in any application that will print. Use File->Print. Choose Save as PDF. If you get the full Finder view for selecting a destination, click the up-caret to get the smaller dialog box.

Note that the Favorites in this view is not the same as the Favorites in the large view. How do I remove items from that Favorites list?

Those favorites are a superset of my Finder favorites. With the down-caret clicked, I see Finder favorites.

Anybody know how to maintain the Favorites as seen in the two different views in the Save As dialog in the print options?

Are you referring to the menu showing Save to iCloud & Save to Web Receipts, etc.

If so, at one time this menu was just a folder containing links, and I was able to remove Web Receipts and other links that I never used. Later Apple made it read only, and now it is apparently hidden because I cannot find it when I search in Terminal.

Apple appears to be slowly making macOS more like iOS and iPadOS.

Thanks for your reply.

In that “save to icloud, etc.” menu, click save as pdf.

Click the up-caret beside the “where” field, if it’s not already a down-caret.

Now click the double-ended up/down. There will be a list of favorites.

Very curious how to scrub that list. It’s not a big deal, just strikes me as odd that somehow I set favorites on my old Mac which have followed me to the present day. A few of the favorites are directories that don’t exist any more.

FWIW, the favorites list is the same for me in Golden Gate whether expanded or not.

Sounds like maybe you have some cruft somewhere that needs updating.

The list you want to edit is a mirror of the Favorites in your Finder Sidebar

Delete a location from the Sidebar and it removes it from the Save list. I can’t believe I didn’t see that before.

I showed Siri AI the menu, and it gave me the solution.

If only it were that easy.

In Preview, File->Open has a favorites list that is indeed synced with the Finder favorites. On the bottom edge of File->Print, Save as PDF has two favorites lists.

The “Where” field has a caret. If the caret is pointing down, I get an abbreviated Save dialog. If I click the caret to get it pointing up, the Save dialog is expanded.

With caret pointing up, clicking the Where field produces a list including Favorites. These Favorites are not connected, at last not in bi-directional sync, to the Finder favorites.

With caret pointing down, clicking the Where field produces a list without Favorites. The Favorites are instead listed on the left edge of the Save dialog - and they are synced with Finder favorites.

I also think I know why it bugs me. When documentation fell out of style, many large companies became dependent on tribal knowledge among staff. Staff, of course, are a gateway to corporate profits in the short term. Layoffs make big companies rich (this quarter).

And so, I grumble.

Thank you for your replies.

I really thought we had this figured out, but regardless of what I select, all I’m seeing is the same list of favorites. Or lists of folders based on the location I have selected.

No problem, always happy ( to try) to help
