I don’t mind if apple call it “fill”, rather than maximise, but FINALLY (in MacOS Sequoia) you can double click the title bar to maximises a window.
Apple has always (until now) been adverse to “Maximize”. But there have been 3rd party utilities that do this. I use BetterSnapTool.
Yeah, I’ve been using that too, and it was the only thing I used it for. It was good, but I’m pleased I can retire it.
Waitaminute … I am on Sonoma and double clicking will Zoom, which is, to me, maximize. It goes edge to edge from side to side and top to bottom. It is not fullscreen (as in going into a Space of its own). What is the difference with Fill then?
Zoom doesn’t always maximise, though it usually does. I’m assuming Fill does.
Zoom depends on the app itself. E.g. try it with finder and it won’t maximise.
I alway thought Zoom (and the original green button operation) to be “Optimize”. It doesn’t fill the screen but maintains what the app considers to be the biggest window with the ideal aspect ratio or width.
I thought that macOS had this feature from the get-go. It used to irritate me as I would inadvertantly double click the title bar of a window and it would maxmimize. Hated that so much I switched it off several full releases ago.
I will NOT be re-enabling it once Sequoia arrives.
Nope, here’s Sonoma:
Prior to Sequoia “Fill” wasn’t available. The concept of Maximize (like Windows does) didn’t exist in Mac OS. What it did was Zoom, or as I think of it “Optimize”
TWO clicks you say? I prefer to conserve my clicks and click ONCE on the green button.
fullscreen is my preferred “Maximize”
Ah I now understand the difference thanks but no matter what that setting will not change on my Macs. The only reason for me "fill"ing the screen is watching programmes on Netflix or other streaming services. I most assuredly do not want it poppung up on a whim because I accidentally double-clicked the title bar of a random window.
I would kill to have a “window shade” function like in Mac OS 9!
Well, sure! You can see I have it turned off as well! You can optimize/maximize/go full screen by other means than clicking the title bar.
The Stickies app is still around and it still does the window shade by clicking on the title bar!
Indeed there are and I use them but it is deliberate. My experience with double clicking the title bar was 99.9999…% accidental and unwanted. I have a checklist of things to do when commissioning a new Mac and turning off double click maximize/full of windows is one of the first items to be checked off.
It’s still pretty common in Linux WMs and DEs.
