Finder sidebar items keep disappearing

From time to time items previously placed in Favorites in my Finder sidebar disappear. Examples include Desktop, Downloads, Movies, Pictures and one of my frequently-used Dropbox folders. The main Dropbox folder (with its special icon) remains in the sidebar, but moved to the end of the sidebar list in “Locations”.

This happens repeatedly, but infrequently enough that I cannot determine a pattern or a possible action I might have done to cause this.

To correct the problem I navigate in Finder to the desired folder and drag it to the sidebar. Using Finder Settings works for some of the items (Desktop, Downloads, Movies, Pictures) but not for the main Dropbox folder or a Dropbox subfolder. This works for a while … until some or all of these disappear again.

Has this happened to others? Anything I can do to prevent it?

Yup

Yes. I need to pin Desktop back there about once a week.

For Desktop it helps to check its box under Sidebar in the Finder Settings.

I have that checked, and Desktop still disappears from the list at random. It’s not a new bug; it has stubbornly persisted over the last couple of OS versions…

Yup. I’m down to four folders that I can (usually) count on to be in my sidebar under Favorites: Applications, my home folder, and one each for the EagleFiler and NotePlan apps. When one or the other disappears for no apparent reason, I just drag it back again to the sidebar. :man_shrugging:

Yes, it happens to me periodically with iCloud folders I added to the sidebar only to find that they are no longer there some weeks later.
