For those that switched to Apple Passwords

After a length of time, what are your thoughts? Any issues or concerns?

My 1Password account is coming up for renewal and I’m mulling switching over – I never got any family members interested in using 1Password and work has their own approach.

If you use Safari as your main browser it’s great. I’ve only had issues with 1Password autofilling on the Mac since they moved to their electron app. If you’re using anything other than Safari as your main browser stick to 1Password. The iCloud password extension is not good on Chromium or Firefox.

I miss having 1Password hold some of my non-password items like software licenses but I’ve moved those to a spreadsheet for now.

Other than those 2 issues I haven’t had a problem. I was even able to export my passwords and 2FA’s from 1Password to Apple Passwords very easily.

1Password is the only software sub that I am currently paying for (aside from 2TB iCloud plan and Inoreader).

It’s that good and I dream of the day I can cut the cord.

Interesting - I’m not having any issues with Brave and the Passwords app, other than having to re-enable it when Brave updates. I don’t use Chrome and only rarely use Firefox.

I stopped updating 1Password when it went subscription- there was no benefit to me in the additional features. I tried various alternatives, but found that Passwords does everything I need.

I switched from 1Password to Passwords just over a year ago and have no major complaints. I use Safari and the autofill works great, contrasting with the myriad problems I faced with the 1Password browser extension. (This was a key motivator for my migration.)

For the non-password items I used to store in 1Password, I now use a combination of the notes field on Passwords entries, Apple Notes, and spreadsheets. My only quibble is I sometimes encounter a site whose password requirements are quite specific, and the password generator in Passwords lacks some of the options available in 1Password.

I took the same route as @Helios, no regrets.

I’ve only been using Passwords on my Mac for about a month. My iPad had been my primary computer until I installed iPadOS 26, and I wasn’t using Passwords or 1PW on my Mac. So I thought I’d give it a try.

I’ve been using 1PW since version 2 and depend on some features that Apple will probably never implement. But while Passwords is pretty basic it seems fine if you stay Apple only. IMO.

Maybe I have a wrong setting but it constantly asks me for 2FA when using Chrome or Brave.

What is the status of using the Apple Passwords app with other browsers, ie., with extensions? Also, aren’t you locked into Apple if you set up a passkey with it, whereas with 1Password, it’s cross platform?

Thanks for all the responses. I think I’ll give it a try before my 1Password subscription runs out.

I mainly use 1Password for logins, but I also have other important information in there. Curious how the people who left 1Password store this information.

  • Secure Notes
  • Credit Cards
  • Driver License
  • Passport
  • Social Security numbers for myself and family members
  • Software Licenses

I used Passwords in parallel with 1Password almost as soon as it was released. I have never needed to open 1Password. I store all of my passwords and passcodes in Passwords, and I place any other documents that I want to secure in Apple Notes and lock the note. This approach has served my purposes well. I have had no issues with Passwords whatsoever. I have also found that Passwords works more seamlessly with Safari. I should note that I use my iPad for the majority of my work, so this could be a peculiarity of iPadOS and Safari.

Do you lock individual notes, or use Advanced Data Protection, which provides E2E encryption for your all your notes (and more)? Use Advanced Data Protection for your iCloud data - Apple Support

If the former, would you share why? I use ADP and haven’t noticed a downside.

I currently use Uplock (previously Access) for my non-password stuff. I can’t remember what enticed me to buy this app, but I would likely switch to Notes if I ever had to pay, again.

How do you unlock Password on the Mac? For example on the iPad it uses Touch ID. Is Password unlocked as soon as you sign into your Mac? With 1Password, as you know, once into your Mac, it requires a second password to unlock your vault?

No, I have not enabled ADP. As I understand it, ADP comes with several risks. Although unlikely, if I ever lose my Apple ID password, device passcode, or recovery key, Apple cannot help me recover my data, and the loss would be permanent. That is a scary proposition since nearly everything I do digitally is in iCloud with a few exceptions in Google Workspace. I’ve read there have been reports that certain shared iCloud features, such as shared albums, collaboration tools (I frequently share Apple Pages, Keynote, Notes, and Numbers documents with my EA), and accessing data through iCloud.com, can be limited once this feature is enabled. That could create a problem for me. In short, the protection is excellent, but the margin for error is narrow. Given my circumstances, the risks outweigh the benefits.

On my iPads (11” and 13” M4), Passwords unlocks instantly with Face ID. Since the release of iPadOS 26, I have barely touched my MBP, but I believe Passwords unlocks with Touch ID on that device.

Ok. I was thinking Mac Mini without TouchID. I’ll look at Apple Support. 1password just updated their software to open once Mac is unlock bypassing the vault password. It’s optional to do that. I like the second password just for security sake but others want the convenience.

UPDATE: After more research, you can not set a separate password for the Password app which means that once into the Mac, all passwords are viewable. This won’t do it for me. Sticking with 1password for now.

1Password can save credit card numbers including the associated CCV code and zip code when needed. Can you do that with Passwords/Keychain?

I store my credit cards in Apple Wallet and Safari’s auto-fill feature. This combination works seamlessly whenever I need to make a purchase.

True. If your data was not backed up somewhere else.

I tested ADP, then turned it on “permanently” a couple of years ago. But I do not rely on iCloud, Apple Notes, or Reminders, etc. I mainly use iCloud and Hazel to move files from my iPad to my Mac. AFAIK I would only lose the few apps I purchased through the App Store.
