Future of ScreenFlow?

Does anyone here happen to know the current status of ScreenFlow? There hasn’t been a bug fix for an unusually long time (over 8 months), and it’s been even longer since the last major release (over 3 years, compared to the usual 1 to 2 years). On Reddit and Facebook, there are indications that support inquiries are not being answered.

I work quite a lot with the app (and others here do as well). It would be a great shame if it didn’t continue…

Camtasia is an excellent alternative, though TechSmith sucks and their new sub model sucks even more Lol

They are still selling it. They may be just focusing on the new release “rebuilt from the ground up that will involve a subscription”. This is usually the way these things happen. I love screenflow and keep upgrading even though I rarely use it. Its one of those apps, I always want in my toolbox. I didn’t realize it had been 3 years since v10… time flies.

As long as it works, I’m not exactly stressing out about them not releasing a new version. Is there anything in it that’s actively broken for you?

Dear Lord, $200 a year for screen recording? That’s insane.

Ok I did some digging. There are people in the Screenflow Support group on FB that paid the support subscription, and all of their support requests for the past 8 months have gone unanswered. Others are saying the the entire support staff was laid off.

If you purchased from the App Store, you should be able to get a refund.

Well that sucks. Just looking around a bit out of curiosity, i see this:

Looks like a reasonably-priced potential alternative. I have no experience with it, but I’d give it a shot if I had to leave Screenflow.

I also have this and it works well for lightweight stuff. I haven’t tried a big project with it though.

No, nothing broken. But is it a good idea to create content with an app that might not work properly in a future version of macOS? What I especially appreciate about ScreenFlow is the video editor, which is, in my opinion, easy to use and yet powerful. I would prefer not to have to learn something completely new. Isn’t @MacSparky also a heavy ScreenFlow user?

yeah, thats a nonstarter for me.

I guess it depends on what you mean by “create content”. If you are likely to have to go back and reference things and/or rework them, then yeah. You might want to look into something else.

Typically when I finish something in Screenflow, I am done with it. Being able to go back later is a nice bonus, but not required.

I’ve use iShowU (in various versions) since 2007 for screen recording lectures that I then edit with camera video using FCP. Admittedly I’ve only infrequently used it in the past 8 years since retiring. It’s solid and well maintained. Now either per year or perpetual licenses. iShowU V6 | The most awesome screen recorder for macOS

Screenflow (and competitors) fill an interesting niche.

I don’t use it, but considered it a while back.

But anyone needing an all-in-one screen recording and light editing/production tool, I think Screenflow and similar fill a great need.

On the other hand, if you really just need a screen recorder, lots of free or inexpensive tools that will do that nicely and then hand-off to any other tools you want for editing and publishing.

I found myself using macOS QuickTime to record iOS device screens, as ScreenFlow wasn’t reliable enough for me.

Gone through several editing suites, but have been using Adobe Premiere Pro for a few years now. I think if I was starting over, I would give DaVinci Resolve a serious look - free, or almost free, and giving both Adobe and Apple’s Final Cut Pro very strong competition.

After trying many, I settled on (edit): CleanShot X as a more capable screen capture tool than QuickTime; it does a great job at video capture, but I think is more widely known as a replacement for macOS built-in static screen captures.

You talk about CleanShot X, I guess?

I am definitely keeping track of Screenflow. It’s the best tool, in my opinion, for what I’m doing, but it also doesn’t seem to be getting much love. I’m thinking about that.

I used Camtasia a long time ago when it was reasonably priced. A few years ago, when I decided to start doing some screencasting again, I looked around and was shocked; Camtasia was about double the price of Screenflow. I decided to go with ScreenFlow.

Just in time ScreenCasts Online did a video on Screen Studio. I haven’t watched it yet but something I want to look at it.

I watched the SCO video earlier today; @mikeschmitz provided an excellent overview of Screen Studio. It won’t replace ScreenFlow for me (assuming ScreenFlow continues to be developed and supported moving forward). Still, I could see Screen Studio being a handy tool for quick, high-quality videos.

p.s. You can install Screen Studio and put it through its paces. Without a license, everything works except the export feature.

I got the non-sub version via education upgrade discount. Was closer to $130 1 time fee.

Screenflow may have more than a dev problem. People are complaining that they paid for the stock footage subscription and no longer have access to it even though their subscription is still valid.

Have you reached out to them? You may get more of a response than us foolish mortals. :grinning:

Also: blink twice if you are NDA beta testing Screenflow 11.
