Getting personal with the betas (but not at the Apple Store)

I had a notice to upgrade my MBP from 14.6.? to 14.7 (public beta) and it caused all kinds of ruckus.

Nothing could circumvent this “personalization” error. I tried installing from Safe Mode, as a different user, from a bootable installer, and from the recovery partition. Apple Support chat told me to go to the Genius Bar. The Genius Bar sent me away because I had the Public Beta installed. “We don’t support betas.”

Has anyone seen this error before? How do I get around it? I think I just have to wait till Monday when Sequoia overwrites it or gives me the same error.

I happened to search the macOS beta subreddit a day or two ago and that seems like a not uncommon issue.

Searching yesterday I couldn’t find this, but did today: Failed to personalize software update, M1 Mac. The solution seems to require a firmware update, necessitating two Macs and plugging cables into particular ports between the two.

I hope you have a similar setup and can get it to work.
