Getting started with Omnigraffle and Omniplan

Hi all, recently acquired Omnigraffle and Omniplan. Long time OmniFocus/GTDer. Excited to get started with them. Looking for URLs and links to help speed up my learning/getting to grips with the tools.

All recommendations appreciated!

Reading through the OmniPlan manual helped me a lot. Right now there’s no epub version for OP 4, unfortunately, but it’s on the web. Hopefully they’ll add an ebook version soon. https://support.omnigroup.com/documentation/omniplan/mac/4.2.2/en/

Please forgive my ignorance, but how do you mark your post, “watching”?

Tap on the bell/notification button at the bottom of the post and select Watching

Hope this helps.

A few years on, no progress, need to pick up Omniplan again.

Their own short Tutorial is a good starting point but I was hoping for a @MacSparky Field Guide for Omniplan equiv. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Are you using the apps daily?

OmniFocus I have since 2 came out. OmniPlan I did for a few months, years ago, and dropped it when it didn’t help with my previous circumstance. I want to pick it up again to help manage some complex projects.

All tips to get started faster and ideas for power using appreciated!

OmniGraffle I also have and want to use more but the priority is the above. Any guides for OmniGraffle are also appreciated.

Take 3! I’m back on OmniPlan, again. OmniGraffle might follow but the current focus is OP.

Using it daily is definitely the key for me.

Hoping it takes this time, I need it more than ever.

OmniPlan and OmniGraffle are two completely different apps with completely different purposes.

I’ve used OmniPlan occasionally, but not regularly. In my experience, it delivers on its promise: creating Gantt charts. The real question is, are Gantt charts useful for your needs? Answering that will help determine whether OmniPlan is worth integrating into your workflow.

For me, Gantt charts are great for visualizing concurrent processes on a timeline. As a professor, I’ve used OmniPlan to map out the stages of course development alongside a timeline. I’ve also used it for planning an academic conference.

OmniPlan integrates nicely with OmniFocus. You can drag content between the two apps, and various metadata—like durations—carry over. That said, OmniPlan can be a bit “fiddly,” with a noticeable learning curve before you can use it effectively. Once you get past that, it’s a solid tool for detailed project timelines.

Good luck! Did you read the manual yet?

I see you’re in engineering leadership; showing your Omniplan files off will help you commit to using it. Where I’m familiar with OmniPlan usage, they are always being screen-shared, data from the files passed around, etc.

They have significant usage overlap in project planning/explaining. And you can send OmniPlan exports into OmniGraffle to tweak and save/print.

Of course. OmniPlan computes projects and displays graphical representations of those plans/schedules. OmniGraffle creates, edits and displays graphical displays of things, including graphical representation of projects. Complimentary–yes, of course. As is an Outliner app for project planning complimented by an app that helps someone write. The best apps are complimentary, but different, IMHO.

I used OmniPlan professionally or many years (I was a project manager). If you want to use it as a project planning and management too, it demands time and attention to understand how it works and get the best from it. If you simply want to use it to provide a good graphical display of the project timeline, it’s a lot less work.

Thanks, all.

I need it to convey, up and down, the projects we’re working on and their status/completeness. Starting with the basics of visually representing them, consistently. Building to being able to model costs, manage resources and scenario plan.

And, this time I need to learn more about multi-project dashboards and other Omniplan v4 Pro features.

@rms not yet… I work for https://collectingcars.com as HoE. I’ve done the tutorial and inputted milestones, groups, tasks and resources. I have two other small guides to read and then the manual. We are managing a lot of technical projects and it’s crucial I keep everyone informed.

All hints, tips and thoughts are appreciated!
