Well this is timely. A new camera* very recently prompted me to re evaluate what was out there in the photo sharing space and I ended up disappointed. I did not find this app. Having found it, it is hard to figure out whether it is viable or not - iphone app, talk of an ipad app but can’t find one on the store, not much evidence of ongoing activity on the website. Any keen CURRENT users out there?
I’d happily pay $5/year or so for a limited reader account. I love the browsing experience on iPad, and I like artistic photos, but I don’t have any desire to share my own photos or comment.
As for long-term viability, it’s all good whether Glass succeeds or fails if the community is able to take their data with them at any time, which appears to be the case. The relationships made will also carry to the next network.
Totally understand wishing people would use Flickr, but the investment in the product and the community hasn’t really been there in some time. Sad, but not fixable.
Has anyone here had any experience of 1x.com? It has a free tier and gets around the Trolls and Spammers issue highlighted by @MitchWagner by having the free tier ‘read only’
I have signed up on the launch day or very close to it. I haven’t used it that much (too busy) although I have started to use it more after the iPad update. There again, I’ll likely stay there. I think it’s good there’s a place that doesn’t rely on algorithms, impressions, views and advertisements. I feel like I’m not a product when I use it.
And the software is pretty good too. There’s a few things that I would improve or change but again, it’s a nice piece of software. Turns out you can make a good app that’s only 15 MB in size.
I think the smaller size of the community can be a good thing too. It’s easier to get a professional or someone with more experience to look at your photos and even write a comment. Just today, someone who’s been a photographer twice as long as I’ve been alive did that. Good luck with having a similar interaction on Flickr, you’ll seriously need it. And even the “appreciate” button feels better, carries more weight than a typical “loved” or “like” that we know from Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
And the founders don’t seem to have that “VC mentality”; it doesn’t seem to be about getting big and getting bought to them.
I also think that being subscription-only model can actually be sustainable in this case. I won’t say that App.net was doomed to fail from the beginning. The key difference though is that App.net wanted Twitter users who, being first and foremost internet users, were accustomed to free things (supported by advertising). Glass caters to professional and prosumer photographers and the truth is that
As I just read that also iJustine is looking for an instagram alternative because of the lag of photos actually, I took a look again on Glass.
And wow, what a nice progress in the last months. Looking at the photos on iPad is such a joy.
Thanks for the hint to the subscription link on DF.
Are people still using it? Want someplace to post my photos was wondering if this was still a good place. I enjoyed it when I was a member in 2022, but when I took a break from photography I canceled my sub.
