I use Gmail and never had this issue before, that’s why I’m not sure what to do.
My wife told me the other day the email on her iPhone isn’t working. I figured it was a password issue that was fine, I sent an email it sat in the outbox and it eventually sent. But she kept saying I should get more emails. So I just had her download the Gmail app for her iPhone to see if that was working. When she went into that it says she is basically out of space with Gmail and needs to delete stuff.
Is this really a thing? I never had an issue of running out of space in email.
How should she fix it?
Should she pay for extra space?
We do pay for 2TB iCloud not sure if that helps at all, I know one is Apple and one is Google.
She just wants to get her email working again and has a couple Gmail accounts not sure if that matters.
Each free account on Google gets 15GB of storage (this is slightly variable for a few reasons, but a “normal” account gets 15GB) - that’s for Drive, Photos, email, and everything else. In Gmail on the web at the bottom of the inbox view, it’ll show you how much space you’re using and if you click the link it’ll give you a breakdown of your usage. Here’s mine:
From there, start looking through where the space is being used and delete (or move to another location) anything that you don’t need in the Google account. In the mail search bar, you can use the “Has Attachment” filter to locate emails that have attachments, which will tend to be much larger than a plain text email.
In Google Drive, you can use Manage Storage to find large files.
Paying for extra space is the fastest solution - you’re just kicking the can down the road in exchange for dollars. But you aren’t answering the question “what’s using all this space?”.
We do pay for unlimited iCloud
Apple doesn’t have an unlimited storage plan on iCloud.
Thank you!!! You broke it down pretty good. I will have her do it on a computer, sounds like a better idea. She doesn’t want to pay unless she has to. She really wants to find out what’s using all the data.
I fixed the iCloud I didn’t mean unlimited, we have 2TB.
After looking at my gmail, I noticed I have pictures in Google photos. Is that because I downloaded the app years ago? How do I stop it? The pictures aren’t recent but I want to get rid of my photos in Google photos.
AFAIK the only way you could have uploaded photos to Google is via the Google Drive app on macOS, the Google Photos app on iOS/iPadOS, or by using a browser.
Remove the Google Photos app from your iPhone/iPad before proceeding. If you delete Google Photos from an iOS/iPadOS device it will also delete them from Apple Photos and you would have to recover them from the Recently Deleted folder. Instead use a web browser:
