I’m happy to see this. I was expecting Google to abandon the service. I use it when I don’t want to share one of my personal or work numbers.
Google started selling service to businesses in 2018, that might have helped it survive. I’ve had a free GV number for 19 years that I give it to companies that I never need to talk to, but who require a phone number.
I have the calls go straight to voice mail, then send me a message if someone leaves a message.
I’ve had a Google Voice number for several years for the reason you both have it. But I don’t use it much, so I was occasionally getting a notice from Google that they’re going to deactivate my number. Now I call myself once a month to keep it active!
To stay active, I’ve been texting “;)” every three months to a random number in Google Voice for years. Hopefully I’m not annoying someone.
It would only make sense for Google to abandon it. I moved my spouse’s work phone number over to it sometime last year.
I just text myself on my “real” number each time I get the notification from Google that they’ll take my GV number away
