Hard drive prices are stupid right now

I ran out of space on my Synology (which I’m still quite happy with, so don’t @ me with other suggestions please), and thought I’d just order some bigger capacity drives.

Turns out prices have doubled and nothing is in stock? And when it is in stock, I’m limited to ordering 1 every 48 hours?

I am literally going to be ordering hard drives, 1 at a time, every 2 days, for 10 days, just to get 5 drives. And I will pay over $400 CAD for each 7200RPM 12TB hard drive. (And that’s on sale, saving $100/each.)

I just feel so ripped off. On top of this already being a really boring, not fun purchase — the “plumbing” purchase of business buys — this is now unbelievably expensive.

Anyway, life goes on, man. But what a bummer.

I’ve heard that every unit Western Digital has planned to produce in 2026 is already spoken for. So there’s one major manufacturer that’s basically out of the game for 10 months, and everyone else can capitalize on that.

Bananas situation for us all to be in. I was able to find 3 in a local store today and convince them to sell them to me, but the shelves were pretty, pretty empty.
