Help Requested Trouble shooting Iphone 16 Plus receiving incoming calls issue VERIZON

My storage is half full, I have replaced phone via insurance, reset network setting, hard resets, i turned OFF verizon call filtering, I’m about to make one more troubleshooting call with verizon but I’m at my wits end especially given I’ve never really had reliability issues with my iphones… I wanted to ask here if anyone has suggestion because at this point I’m going to upgrade to a new phone but I’m worried the issues will follow?? Do I have corrupt iphone back up??

**edit – Its been almost a year of people saying they call me and it does not ring on my end… I will just have new voicemail… also My phone gets into modes where it takes me 2 and 3 tries to place an outgoing call

Lastly this closely resembles the issues I’m expieriencing:

What’s the issue you’re having receiving calls?

Hey just edited my post but basically incoming calls go direct to voicemail it does not ring on my end…

sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries for me to place an outgoing call

i have to restart my phone for the call to go out

I’d consider replacing the phone, or trying a loaner iPhone, to be a reasonable next step.

The other thing you might try is a different phone service (a cheap Tello sim or something) to rule out hardware issues, but that’s a lot as a troubleshooting step if you’re not used to juggling sims/e-sims and willing to upgrade the phone anyway.

Do you have any Focus modes enabled? That may limit incoming calls.

Also I thought that there was a setting to only allow phone calls from those saved in your contacts, but I can’t find it now.

Under phone app settings…Call Filtering and/or Screen unknown callers.

I would also check your voicemail settings.

If you search, ‘Why would iphone 16 plus calls go straight to voicemail?’ in AI it gives you a list of things to try (it did in Gemini).

hey keeping this post up for anyone else struggling

the fix for me was disabling calls over WIFI

per tons of forum research this seem to be an iOS bug its pretty nasty as alot of people got fed up with verizon and switch carriers same issue yikes

I had a similar issue with Verizon some years ago (pre iPhone). If I traveled out of town I couldn’t receive calls until I made an outgoing call. Had to spend a lot of time talking with Verizon tech support on a landline while they checked everything on my phone. Turned out to be an obscure setting in their system that prevented me from registering on other towers. It can be a tough problem to troubleshoot.

Interesting that it seems to be Verizon only, and that hundreds of other carriers across the world use WiFi calling with no issues.

We’ve had this happen sporadically, but a phone reboot fixes it for us. Claude thinks it’s Verizon’s fault, if you trust AI.

What’s most likely causing it:

  1. IMS/VoLTE registration drops silently. Modern calls and SMS ride on Verizon’s IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network, the same system that handles VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling. If a device’s IMS registration silently expires or fails to re-register (without the phone showing “No Service”), incoming calls get routed straight to voicemail because the network thinks the device isn’t reachable — while outgoing calls and data still work because those use a different registration path. This matches almost every report in the thread: works for calls placed, fails for calls received, no error shown.
  2. Wi-Fi Calling handoff/registration bug. Several users specifically report the issue clusters on home Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Calling enabled. There’s a known category of bugs where the phone doesn’t cleanly re-register with Verizon’s IMS servers when switching between Wi-Fi Calling and cellular, leaving it in limbo — reachable for nothing.
  3. This is a carrier network-side issue, not a phone issue, evidenced by: same device model working fine on AT&T eSIM in the same physical phone (OP’s own test), issue following the line/account across multiple physical replacement phones for other posters, and Apple diagnostics repeatedly clearing the hardware.
  4. Timing correlates with iPhone 16 launch (Sept 2024) and continues into 2025, suggesting either a Verizon network/IMS platform change or a compatibility issue introduced around that period that Verizon hasn’t fully diagnosed — the “tier 2 ticket” and repeated private-message escalations in the thread suggest Verizon support reps don’t have a documented root cause or fix yet, just case-by-case workarounds.
