(I took the liberty of trying a large spacer, as you mentioned, and that worked too. defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="large-spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

lol well, to each their own. The visually grouping helps me mentally for some reason. But I could see how you wouldn’t want that.
