So here’s a very basic question - when you set up a new custom shortcut, how do you decide what to use? e.g. how do you know it’s not a really important shortcut for another app? Do you have a system? What are your preferences?

Not very many apps use cmd+ctrl+opt modifiers, and even fewer use shift+cmd+ctrl+opt so those are often safe. In addition there’s KeyCue, which can (usually) tell you which shortcuts are active for a given app.
