How to resolve "Cant connect to icloud private relay" error?

…the error has a short description that is particularly unhelpful, “Safari can’t open the page “[every URL I try]”. the error is: “unknown error” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1)”

I found a support document that recommended going to Settings->Privacy and un-checking “Hide IP address” box and re-opening Safari, but I can’t get this change to stick - I can un-check the box, but there is no “OK” or “save” button, and as soon as I navigate to another tab within or close the settings window, it reverts this change… when I click back into Settings->Privacy the box is checked again. Any ideas? Because I got nothin…

Have you tried turning off Private Relay too?

When I get the error I can’t turn off Private Relay; the button doesn’t function. I reboot. The error appeared for the first time for me on Saturday

Unfortunately, from what I’ve found online, this has been happening to some people for at least the past 4 years. Private Relay is part of iCloud+ so some suggest checking to confirm your account is active. Another thing to check is that “Maintain general location” is selected for IP Address Location.

I just discovered on my network connections under Details, Limit IP address tracking is On even when Private Relay is turned off. Turning it off didn’t change my iP address but it might be worth trying.

I use ExpressVPN and until recently Private Relay wouldn’t function correctly with it installed. Now in macOS 15.3.1 it just turns off when I use ExpressVPN and back on when EVPN is off. Removing any third party security or vpn might be worth trying.

And when I cannot find a solution I frequently try creating a second user account to see if the problem is limited to my user account. It may or may not need to be an admin account.

Good luck.

Yeah, this happens on a clean user account. That was the second thing I tried. It also happens using my secondary iCloud account, and with Local off or on. I restart, turn off iCloud Relay.

I do have iCloud+ but do not run any VPN softw- OH! I’m dumb, as I’m typing this message I’m realizing that I’m typing it in a Safari browser window and that the issue seems to have fixed itself sometime, somehow, over the last 24 hours. I did no troubleshooting since I posted the original message above. Nevermind, I guess?!?
