I can watch my free disk space rapidly disappear. What's happening?

Recently I noticed that, in a Finder window I could actually watch my free space disappear. I’m attaching a link to a brief video.

Any thoughts on debug paths? Thanks!

It seems like it might be “STExtractionService.privileged” running. When I killed the process, the countdown of available disk space stopped.

Good read on the function of this service here - macOS ST Extraction Service. The ST Extraction Service is part of… | by Test Drive A.I. | Medium

If you wanted to understand a little more about what files are involved, you can open the activity monitor, click on disk, find the process you are interested in, click the (i) button, click on “Open Files and Ports”.

Certainly shouldn’t be running by default in a noticeable way, unless perhaps you have Xcode running or something else that is doing some serious logging extract/analysis.

I stumbled on this in the Disk area of Activity Monitor. Since I quit it yesterday, the available space has stayed put at 172.71 GB available. I was worried it might be malware, but I think it may be more likely that it’s something legit that just ran amok. But, honestly, I’m just that guy who opens his car’s hood and stares at the engine, hoping for the answer to appear before him. LOL Thanks for weighing in here, Steve! Much obliged!

Good find @SteveMac. I’d like to know the source of the info in this article.

This post reminded me of the movie “The Never Ending Story” where “The Nothing” slowly consumed the planet.

I though that perhaps The Nothing was loose on your system!
