Here’s what I have:
MacBook Pro mid 2012, so 1x Thunderbolt 1, 1x Firewire 800, 2x USB 3
I’m only using the USB 3 ports. 1 for my audio interface, which I want to have connected all the time, of course, and 1 for my USB 2 powered hub where I basically just use for my MIDI controller, my Alesis drum kit, and my iPhone. I can obviously charge my phone somewhere else, so that’s not an issue. I rarely use the Alesis, so technically it’s just the MIDI controller being used more often. But now we get to the “big issue”:
When I want to backup my stuff, connecting the external drive to the hub can sometimes be SUPER slow, but also Carbon Copy Cloner can sometimes act weird and introduce really strange bugs that force me to restart my computer. The developers of CCC already told me that it’s not a good idea to have the hub, but I don’t really like the idea of having to wait for my backups to finish, before I can use my MIDI controller.
Today I was doing some research on USB 3 hubs, Thunderbolt 1 docks, Thunderbolt <> USB adapters, etc, because I just want to have 3 ports I can use without any issues, and get the most out of them.
So the audio interface would still use the USB 3 port.
What would you guys recommend me do when it comes to the Hub and the Thunderbolt port?
