I set up a family watch, but it rings when my phone does. How can I stop this?

I have turned off handoff on my phone. The appleid on the phone is the family member, not mine. What have I missed? My messages and phone calls are going to the watch. Thanks for your help.

It would be better to use your own Apple ID for the watch. You can turn off Mirror my iPhone in the Apple Watch settings.

the appleid on the watch is the family member’s so they can receive messages and make audio facetime calls.
