This was a fascinating read. In addition to the developers’ reaction to Apple’s ad, their critique of the iPad is interesting. I found this comment particularly intriguing, “An iPad does everything and nothing well. It’s the eternal teenager of computers that doesn’t want to grow up and commit [emphasis added].”
Well done post. It covers a lot of ground.
I think this is a great article, and something I have been thinking about a lot.
This, for me, is the standout sentence of the article:
We can be both critical and appreciative of new technology without categorically accepting or rejecting it.
It seems we live in ever increasing times of either ones or zeros - nothing in-between. No shades of grey.
But we can hold multiple truths at the same time. One does not necessarily negate the other.
You seem to be arguing for thoughtful nuance.![]()
That, sadly, is a lost practice in a culture where most everything is viewed simplistically as either white or black and where “I” am the sole arbiter of “my” truth. Post-modernism at its “best.”
I agree. The current tendency of avoiding nuance and assuming that it is either A or B, right or wrong, etc. is just sloppy and intellectually meaningless. Almost nothing in the real world is like that.
Just as an example. I bought my first Mac in 1985 and have owned nothing but Apple computers in the last 39 years. Also iPhones, iPads, etc. Clear a huge fan.
That being said, there are so many ways that I am disturbed by Apple as a company. I find so many of there business practices troublesome and in some cases on the verge of unethical.
So which is it? Am I an apple fan or an apple foe? It must be one or the other.
Am I an apple fan or an apple foe? It must be one or the other.
You’re a true fan who cares and wants Apple to do what is right. ![]()
