My daughter is dyslexic, I bought her an iPad, and I’m wondering if there are any good apps or things for dyslexic people. She is 8 so she is a kid, I don’t have dyslexia I don’t know much about it, I’m learning also. But wanted to see if iPad has any good apps.
What helps someone who is dyslexic depends a lot on the person. There are fonts you can install designed for dyslexic readers. I hate them, and prefer classic serif fonts, but I know other dyslexics who love them.
Try several fonts and see what works for your daughter. Pay attention to the white space around letters; more usually is better. I would have found apps like Whisaper really helpful. I also would have found the Apple pencil amazing because it fixes my weird handwriting, turning it into text.
Do encourage your daughter to try different things to find what wirks for her,
I learned to read, and read well, after using flash cards made from the Dolch Word list. It’s very old fashioned, but it worked amazingly well for me, when phonics just made me cry.
Apple has an Accessibility Feature called “Voice Over” that is quite nice. You can set it up to read the screen out loud by a user selected gesture. (I use two-finger swipe from the top.)
There are also a lot of different voices available, so find one that she likes and make sure it has the “Enhanced” option. Just a few Siri voices are downloaded by default, but it’s a no-cost option to add them.
Getting a Kindle book with additional Audible purchase gives her the ability to simultaneously see the text on screen while it’s being read out to her. I don’t have dyslexia, but am a terribly slow reader. This combo is really helping me get through books.
