Only if you use apps that would make use of the increased per-app memory and you’re hitting limits, or you switch between 2-3 heavy apps often and they keep getting killed in the background.
I’ve wondered about the 8 vs16 too. That much storage is way more than I would ever use. My iPhone and iPad both have 256gb and neither is even half full. I use more space on the phone because all my audio is played from there. More books on the iPad which take far less space.
I would think the extra ram would keep apps from having to reload when switching around a lot.
I’ve been using the M1 iPad Pro for 3 years and the 8GB has been plenty. And I often use Affinity Publisher alongside of 6-8 or so apps all day. Multitasking holds up really well with 8GB. I never see Publisher reload unless I’ve left it for a prolonged period of time - say, 1-2 hours and during that time use, say, 8+ apps. It will eventually drop out.
My 13" with 256 and the magic keyboard are great for me. I also bought a cheap folio for when I’m using it for consumption. I love reading magazines and pdfs on the iPad. Books I read on the Pro Max phone or kindle Paperwhite.
I had the first generation 12.9 pro that finally died. After I got this machine set up and used it a bit, my final thought was that I’ve spent 2K on a state of the art ipad system that really doesn’t let me do anything much that I couldn’t do with the gen 1. Please Apple, more functonality at WWDC.
I’m running a 2020 model that has 6gb with the A12Z processor. The combination of the M level processor and the extra 2gb probably makes a noticeable difference.
Part of minority of users, still happy with my 2018 iPad and not upgrading to latest.
I think you are very much in the majority.
I am glad that, if/when my 2018 iPad dies, that I will be getting something new and better. But, like you, I am very happy with my iPad Pro 12.9 inch from that era. I read the news on it everyday. I like it for book reading around the house. Movies when traveling.
If WWDC declared that there were changes in iPadOS coming that were opening up a lot of new functionality I might be tempted.
But the 2018 is a remarkably useful device and is not constrained in the sort of tasks that I currently use an iPad for.
The big WWDC iPad announcement will be that the iPad is getting the Journal app this fall (December 20, after they figure out how to scale it up correctly). Along with the Calculator app.
Sort of kidding…sort of not.
The test above does not show whether the 1 TB / 16 GB RAM model is worth it for fewer app refreshes. Is it less aggressive in suspending apps in the background, for example? When I launch Craft with 20 tabs, will it immediately spring back to life or take several seconds to do so, as it does now sometimes because the OS has suspended it in the background? It is the same with Safari or any other app that iPadOS might have suspended. 16 gigs should theoretically be enough for this not to happen as often.
Are the 16 gigs models less aggressive in suspending apps in the background? Can someone who’s had an M1/M2 iPad Pro with 1 TB chime in?
@MacBookHipster Perhaps a stupid question, but as the Pencil is now thicker than the 13” iPad Pro itself (the fact which Apple even uses in their promotional images), how does that work if the iPad is used caseless on a desk with Pencil attached? Are the magnets strong enough or does the Pencil have a tendency to fall off?
It’s not a problem with the 11”, which is only .2mm thicker (and the Pencil is thicker than it too).
The Pencil was thicker than the 2018 iPad Pro as well, so this is not a new issue. The 2024 model being thinner just accentuates it.
In any case, the pencil seems to stay solidly attached, and continues to charge, when I set the new 13” iPad Pro on a flat surface. This is true both with one corner propped up by the camera bump and if I hang the camera bump off the edge of the table to get the back surface of the iPad completely flat.
I just got mine (I am ashamed to say, since I have an M2 version I think is great). I don’t have much to add that hasn’t been said already except two things (that have probably been said). I notice the screen border is bigger than the previous version. I haven’t looked to see how much larger it is, but I noticed it right away.
It’s fast (I know, duh). The M2 is fast, but this is noticeably faster just clicking around. Everything is instant. It feels zippy next to the M2, but the M2 is blazing fast.
Edit: picked up my old iPad. The border is not bigger on the M4. I must have been drinking yesterday.
The 13" M4 512 (Cellular) is a keeper for me, the screen is killer and I really like the new Magic Keyboard as a writer. Running Jump desktop on it to use full Scriver from my Mac at home is great.
My one (non iPadOS) complaint is the outer material on the magic keyboard is just horrible for fingerprints. I wish they had switched that out. I will get a skin for it as soon as a UK company has them in.
Given the cost of this thing and remembering the wear on my previous magic keyboard, I did pick up a sleeve for it from Ryan London that I can’t recommend enough. Hand made and high quality. I’ve used them in the past for a 16" MacBook Pro sleeve, Air Pods case, note book cover and iPhone case.
Having not read up on it before buying this version, I was very surprised they kept they the same material as they used on the last one. My old version still works fine, but that material did not age well. It looks horrible because dust/grime clings to it.
That case looks nice. Is it a tight fit with the Magic Keyboard? Does it keep the iPad securely inside when not using the keyboard? Seems like if it was designed to work with or without the Magic Keyboard so it might be too loose/tight at times?
They sell two versions, one sized for the ipad on it’s own or one sized for the ipad with keyboard. It’s not obvious on the website until you go to buy.
It’s a perfect fit with no danger of it falling out. It’s snug now, but the MBP sleeve was the same and the leather loosened a tiny bit once I started using it which made it easier to get out.
I just tried the version I have with the iPad alone and it is NOT suitable. I doubt the folio case would make any difference. I only plan to use the keyboard case so it works for me.
I have a 2023 12.9’’ M2 iPad Pro and definitely both hands.
That’s a nice looking iPad sleeve — thanks for the company recommendation!
It hasn’t fallen off. It obviously moves slightly but not that much.
