I thought it was just me, but I’m starting to see stories/news from other sources that there are charging issues with the iPhone XS models.
It started with my Belkin Valet Charging Dock (which I purchased from Apple with my last phone). When I docked the XS Max, the screen would indicate charging started and the display would go dark. A minute or so later, the phone would wake, chime as if just connected to power. And repeat, ad infinitum.
I disable Raise to Wake and that seemed to help, but not cure the problem.
Next I used the genuine Apple charger and cable to charge the phone, laying it flat on the counter. But inserting the cable doesn’t necessarily start the charging process. A couple times I had to remove and re-insert the plug.
So far, I have been able to charge my phone and the battery life seems fine. It’s just that when I connect/charge the XS Max, I have to pay attention to make sure the connection has started the charging.
No problems here so far. I have an Xs and charge nearly always via cable (Apple and Anker brands) using Aukey or Anker 2 Amp chargers either at home or in the car. I did just try placing it on an IKEA Qi charge pad and, while I had to fiddle with placement a bit, it started charging.
When charging, the phone is either laying on a table or in a vent clip mount in the car.
I do believe raise to wake is a little more sensitive on the Xs but that should not impact charging via cable.
I wonder if the weight of the Xs Max could be causing the connection to not be made properly on this device?
This indicates something might be in the charging port. I would take a torch/flashlight and have a look to see if you can see something in there. If not, and there is an Apple Store nearby, then I’d suggest making a Genius Bar appointment.
It appears to be an overzealous new security feature. A number of people have had success by going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Scroll down to Allow Access When Locked and turn on USB Accessories.
USB Accessories (when working correctly) turns off the USB port to information accessories so if the phone is stolen someone cannot use any device to get into the iPhone by bypassing the passcode or brute forcing the passcode. Unfortunately, there appears to be a bug in iOS and may be turning it on before the 1 hour and it not differentiating a charging device from an information accessing device.
