Fun article from the Verge. I never owned a Mini, but God I miss the iPod. I had a 30 Gigabyte iPod Video and the 6th Generation iPod Nano Watch. If Apple had given Video support to that Nano I would still be wearing that iPod. My brother did a mock up concept of a iPod with a clickwheel with a variant of TVOS and I would buy that so bad.
I still have an IPod Classic.
A 5th generation iPod? The first one with video.
I had a nano (3rd generation). I always found the size, shape, build quality and feel in hand lovely, and at the time it seemed amazing that so much music and such big sound could fit in something so small. But I don’t miss navigating the controls, which I always found a bit slow and clunky to operate despite their smooth movements and tight tolerances, even though I know some people feel nostalgic about them.
I have a first gen iPod. I couldn’t imagine having that much music. I have a 5th gen iPod Mini, and an 80 gig iPod Classic. All work.
At some point I hope to replace the first gen’s battery; it lasts about two hours now.
I loved the iPod Mini. It was my first brand new Apple Product.
The first Gen Nano was amazing!
We were still amazed by the size of the Mini and the Steve Jobs removed the Nano from the coin pocket in his jeans.
Both awe inspiring and ballsy from Apple to kill one of their best selling products in its prime.
Thats the one. My large iTunes library is in part thanks to stocking that thing. I watched pretty much all of Avatar the last Airbender on my iPod.
I had, and still have, the original iPod. Small in storage (5gb) but love the stainless steel back!
iPod nano was my first Apple device. What a day that was. I’ve loved all the products I have owned since. But there was something special about that nano. I wish I still had it
I loved how tiny the iPod shuffle was when it was basically a square shape. It might have been the first I purchased.
The first iPod with video. That plus a small Goal Zero portable solar panel helped me keep my sanity when we were away from our main base in Afghanistan for extended periods of time.
Mine was also a nano: the iPod nano from 2008. I think it was the 4th gen. I surely would still have it today if it hadn’t been stolen by a valet driver in Hollywood.
That thing logged a LOT of running miles with me. The top songs on my running playlist consisted (in part) of
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Finger Eleven - Paralyzer
Let it Rock - Kevin Rudolf
Rhianna - Disturbia
Lady Gaga - Just Dance
Jordin Sparks - One Step at a Time
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow
Aerosmith - Dream On
Electric Light Orchestra - Hold on Tight to Your Dreams
Jackson Browne - I’m Alive
John Williams - Prelude from Superman: the Movie
There were others, but these were the ones I could remember off the top of my head.
Man, I loved that Nano.
The one that had the most utility would have been the 5th gen one I had. But the one that I loved the most was the first one I owned… a 4th gen. I actually didn’t like the look or utility of the three before it.
iPod Video 5.5 gen will alway be my favourite. I still have one with the ‘red wine audio’ hardware mod and 4 x MicroSD upgrade.
These days, I still sometimes use a modded 7th gen with 1TB of SD cards and a larger capacity battery. Having gone more in the Apple Music & Plexamp direction of late I am not using it as much however.
5GB Second gen. I think that I still have it and that it still works. I don’t know if I still have a firewire charger any more, though. I also have an 80GB model that won’t start up.
Does video sync still work with the transition to Apple TV over iTunes. I know podcasts have been cut off.
I’ve not tried to sync a video for a long time. I don’t have the ipod with me while travelling at the moment, so I can’t check.
I would love a modded 1TB video iPod stocked with my library. The only iPod I still got is the 6th Generation Nano Watch and was disappointed to learn that podcast support was dropped.
I’ll check when I’m home next week if nobody else can confirm.
