Is Nitro killing pdfpen?

The Nitro website is a bit disjointed. You can upgrade from older versions at Upgrade to PDFpenPro 13

The latest version is 13.3.1

Has anyone upgraded to Nitro PDF Pro v14?

Itā€™s subscription only via the App Store (not sure if you can get via Nitro website) but it is quite expensive. It actually seems that subscribing via Setapp would be the cheapest option.

Iā€™m still using v13 and as I find some of the features useful (like automatically creating form fields), but Iā€™ve been using PDF Expert more these days.

I havenā€™t and never will. I reached the point a few years ago where I only used PDF Pen to OCR PDFs that didnā€™t have the text layer. However all PDFs I receive these days have that layer so PDF Pen has become obsolete.

Otherwise my comments earlier Is Nitro killing pdfpen? - #20 by tomalmy still apply.

ā€œI am not holding my breath for new features until they ask for a lot of money to upgrade to version 14.ā€ and NOW they have. Just got an update notice for Nitro Pro 14ā€¦ $179.99. Once I awoke from my passing out, I said ā€œNopeā€¦ not for me, perhaps for thee.ā€

lol. nope. I get Acrobat for free with my Adobe subscription. Maybe I will install it now.

Not in my lifetime. :joy:

Maybe I was hallucinating when I said $179ā€¦ NOW it says $249 for a single licenseā€¦

If that is accurate, that is, in my estimation, terrible. :grimacing:

I donā€™t think Nitro is doing themselves any favors by raising the price. Like @tomalmy I have no need for specialized PDF software. If I receive a PDF without a text layer I can opening it in Preview and ā€œprintā€ it to a PDF that now has a text layer. I can do the same with a regular photograph.

I donā€™t even bother to do this if I plan to store the file on Google Drive because it will index most file types with or without a text layer.

I currently have two apps that I can use to scan documents Simple Scan by Agile Tortoise and the Google Drive app. (Which I didnā€™t know could scan, OCR, and suggest a name like ā€œReceipt - CVSā€ until some months ago.)

Most businesses donā€™t think twice about purchasing expensive software like Adobe Acrobat but individuals with simpler needs now have a growing list of free to inexpensive options.

I abandoned the Nitro product long ago, about right after Smile Software sold it. Back in the day, I used earlier versions of PDFPen for slapping a signature image onto documents for emailing, etc. Nowadays, I can use an image of my signature in Preview and Iā€™m all set.

But I realize my needs are pretty minor. There are people out there who need some serious features (such as Bates numbering [IYKYK]) that Preview doesnā€™t offer. But it seems Nitroā€™s pricing is pretty doggone steep.

Please note, however, that for now at least PDF Pro is available in Setapp. I donā€™t mean to sound like @MacSparky, but I too am finding more value all the time in my Setapp subscription.
