Is Scribble better on newer iPads?

I’m interested in buying an iPad and pencil for note taking with handwriting recognition. As a test I’ve tried Scribble out with Apple Pencil 1 on my son’s v old 2017 iPad. To be honest the handwriting recognition is pretty rubbish - it’s passable with single letters and barely recognises cursive writing.

As it is it’s not worth my buying a new iPad, but is it possible better on newer devices? I know Apple wouldn’t admit to this but might there be different experiences on older machines?

Alternatively, will it get better for me - is there any ML going on?

I just moved from an M1 to an M4 but I’m yet to test the handwriting. I will update this when I have.

In the meantime I would say I was/am running ios18 on the M1 and the recognition is so much better on it from ios17. No idea why but I notice a big big difference!
