Issue with retaining face names in Apple Photos

I have started a project of bringing digital as well as personally scanned images into my Macbook’s Apple Photos application. These photos are on my 2018 MacBook Pro. My goal is to get rid of many duplicates that were present when my Dad brought everything onto a computer as well as re-populate names when needed as well as being able to sort by date through Smart Albums.

One important aspect of this project is to identify each person within a photo as it isn’t easy to name group photos when there are broken rows of people. I like the functionality of Apple Photo’s face name feature. Not only could I identify each face in a photo but this also can automatically recognize faces that have already been entered. With this as a very important reason to bring the thousands of photos into Apple Photo I started to bring people into Apple Photo and named everyone using the Face Name feature.

When I started to remove the duplicate photos I encountered in the smart albums I noticed an anomaly that regularly was occurring, more regularly with some people than with others. The people’s names were apparently randomly detaching from photos. A face name that once was identified now became labeled “unnamed”. I re-entered the missing names taking note of any kind of entry pattern that might have caused this glitch I discovered that this did not help any and was quickly beginning to be a large time sink.

When I google searched this topic, I found that there were many that had this issue but also many that didn’t have the same issue. There appeared to be no true solution for the people that had this problem. In my specific case I am using a 2018 MacBook Pro and the majority of pictures that I have entered so far have been black and white. Has anyone here been able to identify a specific cause to this issue, as well as finding a solution?

I may be misunderstanding but could you eliminate all of the duplicates first, and then identify the people by their faces?

Thank you for your reply.

There is a probability of duplicates with the thousand or so images that at this point have been imported into Apple Photos but I did run into this issue early on when I did have all the duplicates removed. I can go through these photos again to ensure there are no duplicates and see whether the behavior changes for the names that most commonly drop and become “unnamed”.
