Just a little squeeze ... (new iPad Pro and Apple Pencil Pro)

A story in three parts.

Part 1 - Where we learn how to transfer contents form one iPad directly to another iPad

Joe was excited. He had just gotten his new iPad Pro M5 to replace his iPad Pro M2. Four years. Extensive use. Annotations. Presentations. Reading. Video viewing. What a solid investment it had been.

But, sadly, its battery was listed just below the 80% threshold. Joe was not really inclined to invest in battery replacement repair. And, being recently retired, he felt entitled to get a new iPad to start a new phase in his life.

So, onward to the Apple store. Apply through an .edu discount (Joe was able to sneak through as a newly retired faculty still holding a valid .edu address). Add the discount to return his M2 iPad. Wow! Cut the cost nearly in half. Joy, joy, joy!

(screen fades … message appears “Three days later …” screen opens on Joe carrying his new iPad Pro back from the mailbox, with a big grin)

Unpack. Set up. Turn on. The air is electric with anticipation.

But wait … What’s this!!!

In his excitement, poor Joe had skipped right past the page to transfer the contents of his outgoing M2 iPad directly to the new M5 iPad.

Gosh darn! Hard reset. Try again. There’s the screen. Yes! Connect to my previous iPad. Go! …

Now what?!

Again, in his excitement, Joe had hit the wrong button on his new iPad just after scanning the registration image swirling on his old iPad.

Gosh darn! Hard reset. Try again. There’s the screen. Yes! Connect to my previous iPad. Wait for it to finish transferring!

Success!!!

Check the new against the old. All 44 GB was exactly transferred. 512 GB down to 256 GB, with plenty of RAM to spare (Joe is a rather careful user of his iPad storage).

All that was left was to await the arrival of his new iPad cover. Same as the old one, just resized to fit.

Joe was rarin’ to go.

Part 2 - Where we learn that an Apple Pencil is not an Apple Pencil Pro

As a next step, Joe grabbed his Apple Pencil 2 and tried to stick it. To the side of his new M5 iPad of course.

But wait … What’s this!!! It does not stick.

In his excitement, Joe had not paid attention to the update. The iPad M5 Pro requires the Apple Pencil Pro. Shucks. If he’d only stopped for a moment to register this before his purchase, he could have included the new pencil with his educator discount purchase directly from Apple.

Oh well. Thank goodness for Amazon prime. And thank goodness for the reward points that he was holding over his recent credit-card purchase of a four-set appliance upgrade a few months ago. As we might say … Buy this refrigerator – I’ll throw in an Apple Pencil Pro for free!

(screen fades … message appears “Three days later …” screen opens on Joe carrying his new Apple Pencil Pro back from the mailbox, with a big grin)

Part 3 - Where we learn that BlueTooth is rather particular about accepting requests for a first date

In the meantime, Joe had gotten his new iPad holder. He had already squeezed the new iPad carefully into the new holder. Being somewhat an engineer, Joe recognized to put the new iPad in the holder first into the bottom portion (without the camera). Then, remove it, and stick the top end in. Then remove it again. Then restart with the camera end, working down to the bottom end. Voila! Done! Take that, all you negative reviewer’s on Amazon about how the cover is too tight!!!

“Now, let’s test this new Apple Pencil Pro”, said Joe, mumbling quietly to himself (even so, causing his spouse to ask from the kitchen … “Say what”???).

Pop the Apple Pencil Pro in place in the holder. Tight fit. But it clicks in nicely. Just like his previous Apple Pencil and the M2 iPad in the previous holder.

But wait … What’s this!!!

The Apple Pencil Pro is registering with BlueTooth (BT) while it is in the holder. But, the minute the pencil is removed, it de-registers from BT.

Grumble, grumble, grumble (“Say what”??? comes back, this time from the living room).

Joe dedicated the next hour to variations on reading (and re-reading) Apple help posts, Stack Exchange help posts, and other help posts. All the while varying the options to reseting the network on the iPad, taking his old Apple Pencil three blocks away in case it was causing cross-talk (OK, perhaps only to the next floor up but, just saying), trying the Apple Pencil Pro with the top up versus the top down, and finally, trying the Apple Pencil Pro with the tip from the Apple Pencil 2 (just in case).

Grumble, grumble, grumble. “Maybe those reviews on Amazon about the tight fit for the holder are right”, says Joe under his breath (… “Say what”???). He carefully removes the iPad from the holder and tries the Apple Pencil Pro on the side.

(waiting with baited breath …)

NO LUCK! Gosh darn. Still no connection after the Apple Pencil Pro is pulled from the iPad Pro. And, if not to make it worse, the Apple Pencil Pro is now not even registering with BT when connected to directly to the side of the iPad.

“Did I get a bum deal on this Apple Pencil Pro from Amazon”, mutters Joe (“Say what”??? comes back from the dining room).

One last time. Attach to side. It connects to BT. Lift off. And … Joe accidentally gives the Apple Pencil Pro just a little squeeze. It vibrates. The BT connection glows with new found luster (OK, not really. But Joe does glow with a new found luster).

And it strikes him. The BT on his new M5 iPad is just being rather particular about making a connection to first date requests. It is like … “Show me that you are serious about staying with me forever, and then I’ll connect with you”. He wonders if this is why he could never get far with first dates in his high school days.

And at this point, his wonderful spouse brings him a warm cup of cider and says “I see you’re having a hard time with the electronics again. Here’s something that may cheer you up”.

And with this, we come to the end of our story.

Oh joe, this is why I am still using my 11 inch iPad Pro circa 2020. I use it everyday and the battery is still okay, not great. My Apple Pencil sticks to the side and my Magic Keyboard works great when I need it. Jimbo will be holding onto this for a bit longer. And Jimbo will also be a retired educator come July 1st.
