Keyboard & Mouse Recommendations

Hey MPU,

Looking for recommendations, I feel like I am being ‘extra’ for this recommendation, a part of me wants to just suck it up and deal. But I am also wondering if this purchase will improve anything for me. LOL.

I currently use the Apple Keyboard (extended) and Apple Mouse. I have a wire at my desk to charge when I need.

This morning is one of those mornings where I forgot to plug in the wire the night before, so managing when I can with what battery I have as quick as possible in my morning routine and using the Magic Trackpad for a few quick and easy things.

If someone were to ever ask me for redesign…

  1. Why can’t the charging cable be on the side for the keyboard…
  2. why can’t the charging cable for the mouse be like a tail…

OR…what if I just had a charging mat under the keyboard and mouse…and it just charged while working!!

Okay, sarcasm and irritation over…anyone have good recommendations for at least a mouse backup or a mouse that I can use while charging if it dies. I think they keyboard is manageable

Anything from Logitech with a wire. I used to buy these by the case to replace a users Magic Mouse.

I don’t have a recommendation for you, but I do have a new respect for my ancient, battery-powered trackpad. When it runs out of juice, I just swap out the batteries and carry on.

And to think, I’ve been coveting a new rechargeable one.

As always the Logi MX Master 3  such a great mouse.

Agree. One nice feature of the MX Master 3 is that the charging port is located at the front, allowing you to charge the mouse while using it simultaneously.

While I have the new Magic Trackpad, I have the OG Magic Mouse, with batteries.

I use the Logitech MX Master 3 mouse with my work laptop, and can recommend it. I avoid the Logi software however.

I use Keychron mechanical keyboards, and while they can work over Bluetooth, I use them (one each for Mac and work laptop) with USB cables.

There is nothing in computerdom which is a more personal choice! Unfortunately, what is needed is a physical store where you can try all the different devices.

What I use, and have for decades, won’t really help you. I use a 1989 Northgate OmniKey/102 keyboard.

and an $8 Logitech B100 mouse. Both devices are wired.

Plug in your Magic Mouse. Take a an 8 minute break. Stretch and walk around. Then get back to work. This misfortune will happen a couple times a year and only if you never bother with paying attention to warnngs that it is getting low. If you have a Magic Trackpad, it seems strange to me that you would be searching for other solutions since you could use the Trackpad for those 8 minutes.

The concern about not being able to use a Magic Mouse while it is charging is, IMO, one of the most over-blown things in the “comment sphere”. A full charge lasts for a LONG time.

As tech support for my aged father, we find Apple’s design of its mouse to be inexplicable and a pain in the butt. So the fancy mouse sits in a drawer while he uses a cheap wired mouse. His Apple Silicon iMac only has two USB ports that must now be shared with a printer, a backup HDD, a mouse, and a SuperDrive for loading his CD collection. :man_shrugging:

Considering all the complaints, they should have just moved the port to the “correct” position when they redesigned for USB-C. Anyway, IMHO, a cheap wired mouse is a better choice. Apple has historically done bad mouse designs, ironic considering the importance of the mouse to the Macintosh.

Apple wants everything wireless so there never seems to be enough ports. A USB hub or two solves this problem, albeit inelegantly.

I love using the Apple Magic Keyboard/Trackpad on my Mac, but I need a new keyboard & mouse for my work’s laptop (Windows PC).

I’m going to try a cheap vertical mouse to see whether I like that more than a regular one:

And I’ll probably buy exactly the same (cheap) keyboard as we use in office:

(the keyboard might be a bit of an issue; it’s not always easy in Europe to get a keyboard with the US-style horizontal Enter key instead of a vertical one; ANSI vs ISO, though I always forget which is which…)

@tomalmy I was also a fan of OmniKey. Just seeing yours reminds me of how much I loved those function keys down the left side. I was a speed demon in WordPerfect for DOS

F6 Bold; F8 Underline; F11 Reveal Codes …

I have the Apple Trackpad and it comes in real handy when the mouse runs out!

I concur with the Logitech MX Master 3 mouse. Have the S version and it is great. Logitech software has good and bad parts.

For a keyboard I am currently eagerly awaiting a Keychon B6 Pro (US-ANSI) layout. That one is a inspired by Logitech MX Keys series but at half the price for a few missing features. But in exchange you are able to configure it similar to a mechanical keyboard because it has memory on the keyboard.

ANSI = American National Standards Institute. Sadly mostly most non-mechanical keyboards are ANavailable in this layout on the continent. Keychron ships them though.

:person_facepalming: That should make it easy to remember this from now on…

And the color coding of Shift/Control/Alt matched the WordPerfect template for the function keys!
