Very similarly, I grabbed a 12.9" iPad Pro that can live in my bag. For travel, I have a keyboard that can tuck in with it - but for the average day-to-day usage if there’s an emergency the on-screen keyboard is sufficient.
It’s much easier to manage apps and data and such on a containerized device as well.
