So I’ve been interested in the digital minimal space for a few years now due to smartphone fatigue. The Light Phone just released a compelling new phone and I am thinking of switching. Has anyone made the switch but had an iPad as their “iOS device?” How was it? Did extracting your phone number away from blue bubbles cause issues with friends or family? I’m thinking of getting the new Light Phone with an iPad Mini with cellular for when I need apps. Basically I’m asking is there any challenges to having an Apple Ecosystem without an iPhone as the anchor?
Light Phone announced a new Phone: Does anyone use an iPad Mini or iPad as their primary iOS device?
Do you own an Apple Watch???
That might be the only drawback I can see.
I do I figured I would have to forfeit it. My ideal set up would be for the Apple Watch App to finally come to the iPad or Mac. Then I would just not have an iPhone.
I have not, but I’m testing the iOS 27 public beta on my old iPhone 11 using WiFi only.
And it appears you would be unable to use Messages and would need to use something like WhatsApp or Google Voice on your iPad, and use your light phone for SMS messaging.
But as long as my iPhone 11 is logged into the same apple account as my iPhone 16P I cannot be 100% certain.
I’ve attempted a dumb phone before, but you really need to think through practical realities.
For example, my banking app highlights all my income and expenditure and notifies me so I am immediately aware of unauthorized expenditure.
I maintain a WhatsApp community.
The rest I could do without, but those two are non negotiable and I certainly don’t want a second phone.
These make a dumb phone pretty untenable. Having said that you can of course just disable and uninstall other apps. That might be a better course of action to test your resolve.
why Whatsapp? Why Meta?
Switch the users to Signal
Have you ever tried to switch 100 users to another platform? Most want familiarity and ease of use. Plus they are embedded in WhatsApp with family and other aspects of life.
It’s why many people (me included) have chat style messaging across, Apple Messages, Facebook Messaging, WhatsApp, Telegram…
If I could I’d ditch WhatsApp and FB Messenger
WhatsApp is basically the iMessage of the rest of the world. An ecosystem that everyone uses and because everyone uses it it makes it hard to leave.
