Mac Out of Space...but not?

Had some confusion in the last 20 minutes…no clue what caused it or how to find out.

I was downloading an image from Canva that I created (file size was 1.6 Mb). Safari would not download it, kept saying I am out diskspace…

I check my disk space, 774GB out 1TB used up with 220 GB free. No clue.
Restarted my computer, everything back to normal again.

I have Activity Monitor open to see what’s happening

  • all apps have just been restarted
  • ApplicationsStorageExtension, CGPDFService, usernotificansd, kernel_task, and a random .com.apple.MobileSoftwwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService (this last one is really killing the CPU)

System ~18-22%
User ~22-54%
idle - 50-80%

Just a guess, but were you on a Sequoia 18.2 beta? I had an “out-of-memory” issue with Sequoia when all I was doing was importing images into Lightroom - on an M3 with 32 GB of physical memory. Not the same as “out-of space”, but Sequoia 18.2 seems to have a problem counting things.
