Mac Studio and Studio Display reviews

Keep in mind that the iPad (9th generation) uses this same 12 megapixel camera and an A13 chip and gets good performance out of Center Stage.

Both Nilay Patel and Joanna Stern are respected journalists, they report on the facts and provide opinion. it’s realistic to state that the camera quality is appalling without knowing or speculating what the reason may be.

I have to admit I enjoy her articles & videos. They are a welcome change from much of what passes for tech journalism these days. For example, her review of the original HomePod was spot on - with the exception of her command (at approximately 0:40) ". . . volume up to 100 and play . . . ". She apparently forgot that only Alexa and the Google Assistant could do that. Siri still cannot respond to multiple commands.

I find Joanna Stern’s YouTube reviews to be humorous and enjoyable to watch. Watch and make your own judgements. Or don’t watch. YouTubers don’t don’t care why you watch them (like or hate). They just want you to watch them!

Does anybody have their display yet, and can anybody confirm that the plug is or is not removable? Nilay’s word is great but he’s the contrarian one so far.

He also provided photographic evidence.

Yeah, but everybody else has said theirs isn’t budging, so I’m curious: how much strength does it take to unplug it? Is it easy to get it plugged back in? Is this interaction easy, difficult, or plain old meant to be avoided?

Thank you for providing the link to her video. How fun! It’s great to have someone discussing tech with wit and charm.

Well, I, for one, am not going to try to remove the plug. It seems that the power cord is not really meant to be removed.

eek. that’s my worst nightmare. I’m hardly even going to the bathroom on days when UPS is due to drop my goods!

I have watched far too many reviews now and in relation to the display I think you have to be careful how biased the opinion is based on the dollar value. Many of the reviewers are comparing the monitor to other similar monitors on the market such as the LG which is a fair comparison for the general monitor buyer.

But whilst I think we all know that the monitor is overpriced based on its technical specification we also need to take into account build quality and the overall aesthetic that I think most of us want.

I have actually order both monitor stand variants but am pretty certain that I’ll be keeping the height adjustable one. Is the stand worth an extra Ā£400? No. But if I want a monitor that looks attractive on my desk alongside a Mac Studio then its a price I have to pay.

I’ve personally always thought my iMac 27" was a little low so it will be good to be able to raise it a little. Sure you can place the regular stand on a shelf or similar but I personally don’t think that’s a good look.

With regards the Mac Studio itself, I’m a little disappointed about the fan being audible constantly and will have to see how that goes.

I distrust reviews/ers and I only watch them (sometimes literally on silent) to see real-life footage of the product in question since they usually make that available before I get to see things for myself at the Apple Store.

I have a Studio Display coming today, also. I will say this re: your evaluation of its price-worthiness (which is, of course, entirely subjective and relative to your means):

The Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays of the past aged magnificently and looked great for many years after they went on sale, despite the fact that in the meantime, higher resolutions became common. When they were launched, there was no ā€œretinaā€ in the Apple world. They didn’t start off already with a deficit.

Now, I wonder (underline wonder) whether the Studio Display, instead, is going to age worse because today we already have competing display technologies (mini-LED and OLED) which have distinct advantages over the single backlight in the Studio Display. Today, MBPs and Pro Displays already use mini-LEDs, as do some iPads, and iPhones use OLED. If, in 5 years time, the rest of the non-pro line-up will have migrated to mini-LED, and I suspect it will have, then there is a risk (underline: risk! I’m not saying that’s a foregone conclusion) that the Studio Display won’t look as impressive as the Thunderbolt Display did 5 years after release. In fact, the one tidbit of value that I got out of all the reviews was the side-by-side contrast level comparison with the Pro Display XDR shown by The Verge. If/when better contrast ratios become ubiquitous, the Studio Display’s may stand out for being mediocre.

Personally, I worry about this because this display needs to be great for several years to justify the price. I think there is a great chance that it will, the A13 inside and good camera specs are a great way to future-proof to some degree, but the use of single backlight is worrying. That’s my 2c.

Not sure what that update was for but it was not a camera fix. I see no change in the camera view. Fingers crossed soon because it’s not great. Side by side, the Ultrafine camera is better which shouldn’t be the case. Objectively, the LG camera isn’t all that great.

No delays for me. I’ve come home to find a new iPhone and other expensive items sitting in front of my door. It’s like the delivery services prefer dealing with stolen packages to making a second delivery attempt.

This is from the Apple Studio Display manual. About this Mac → Displays → User Manual

Thank you for finally settling this for me with something more conclusive than a tweet.

On a separate note, I was able to check out both the glossy and matte displays at an Apple Store tonight, side by side. The glossy display is perceptually sharper, and not by a little. Colour saturation is indeed better (although only marginally) on the glossy display. Off-axis viewing is much better on the glossy display.

I ordered both, just in case, and have cancelled my nano texture display. Unless you are in a crazy bright environment, I don’t see a need for it, considering the tradeoffs.

FWIW, the anti-glare coating on the Studio Display is even better than the one on my iMac Pro. It was totally fine in an Apple Store.

Just thought it was worth sharing.

How does one initiate a manual software update for the display?

I don’t know how to force an update. My Display Firmware Version is v15.3 (Build 19D8050). It should be v15.4 same as latest version of iOS and iPad OS. Guess will just have to wait.

As I was at the local mall last night, obviously I had to stop by the Apple Store to see the new toys.

I did see one fellow picking up his Mac Studio. I decided it would be rude to push in too closely, so I don’t know if it was a Max or an Ultra!

They had two Studio Displays set up, one attached to a Studio and the other to an MBPro. Both were glossy, I did not see one with nano texture.

From just a few minutes with them, these displays are gorgeous! I am presently using the LG 34" ā€œ5K2Kā€ display, and I have no doubt the new Studio Display is far better. That is perhaps not a surprise given that the Studio Display is putting 5K into 27" vs 34", but still…

I did not check out the built in camera or the speakers (I should have played some music or something…next time), so I cannot comment there.

There was really no way to get a sense as to the speed of the Studio just from playing around a bit. It was snappy, but of course so is my 14" MBPro M1 Max, and since single core performance isn’t going to differ between these two systems, it would be impossible to comment on the Mac Studio just from playing around in Photos to look at the attached monitor.

Despite some critical reviews, a few minutes with the Studio Display left me impressed. Enough to be jealous of @ChrisUpchurch who, if I read his posting correctly, has three of these on the way…
