MacBook Pro battery capacity at 90% in 8 months

Bought my MacBook Pro 8 months and see battery capacity at 80%. Should I go to apple and ask for replacement? This is super weird.

Battery cycle count 187

This does look like a bit too much capacity lost within 8 months, but I believe that Apple will not replace the battery (at least not for free) unless it falls below 80% before its maximum cycle count is reached.

This is subpar battery quality honestly. My intel MacBook Pro had 85% capacity after 5 years.

Losing 10% of your battery capacity in 8 months seems abnormal. I’d take it in if you live near an Apple Store.

What’s your cycle count? Do you leave it plugged in a lot after it’s fully charged? Apple’s optimized battery charging is pretty useless if you keep an irregular schedule or leave it plugged in most of the time.

I have a new M3 MBA. Al Dente is one of the first things I installed, and I’ll continue to use it unless Apple adds the 80% option they introduced in the iPhone 15 Pros.

No. I charge it to 100% and then unplug it.

That does seem abnormal

I recommend using the AlDente app to preserve the battery health of your Mac. I use it and always have 100% battery capacity after a year. I set the charge threshold to 80%. Some people in this forum argue against using AlDente, even as Apple adds 80% charge limiters to their other pro devices.

I’m thinking what do I even tell them. They’d say it’s not below 80% so keep using it.

Current battery status

  • model: 2020 M1 MacBook Air (13-inch)
  • date of manufacture: 2021-05-09
  • battery charge cycles: 513
  • expected cycles remaining: 487
  • original capacity: 84%
  • assessment: good
  • Battery Monitor app by Marcel Bresink (data)
  • AlDente app by AppHouseKitchen (control)
  • Didn’t start running AlDente until a year ago.

I’d tell them you bought it only 8 months ago and it’s already lost 10% of its capacity. At this rate the battery in a MacBook you bought brand new will only last a little over a year and a half. That’s unacceptable. You haven’t been abusing it or subjecting it to excessive wear and tear.

I’m thinking it is too soon to start worrying. :slightly_smiling_face:

As the gentleman in this post, Mac battery health drops rapidly - Apple Community, says:

The maximum charge capacity of lithium-polymer batteries does not decrease in a linear fashion. It may even increase from time to time, although the long term trend is down.

I started using AlDente about three years into my 2017 MBP and it noticeably slowed down the battery degradation. It was one of the first things I installed recently on my new M3 Air. It will be interesting to see how the battery fares over the next few years.
