Macshot screen capture - I really love it

My needs - for creating user guides to software, and reply from a Helpdesk - are to easily capture, easily mark up (outline shapes, text, arrows) and then easily copy with minimum clicks.

I have been using Snagit but license expired. I liked Shottr but couldn’t find a way to to add text in a font other than the default one which was a bit too informal. MacOS screenshots + preview not very efficient for my workflow as it required too many clicks I came across Macshot (free, open source) on Reddit and it is absolutely perfect for me.

Also great for short screen cast videos - adding blur and text to a timeline. No need to to go off to a separate video editor.

I can’t speak highly enough. It’s almost uncannily suited to my needs and way of working, and pleasurable to use. Great design, layout and intuitive, does more than I initially wanted.

I tried to donate but they don’t take donations. Is there a catch?

My screen captures from the native Screenshot app tend to be a little blurry.

Any thoughts about the quality of Macshot or other screen grab utilities?

Seems fine. I presume these apps capture pixels from the screen so I capture as large as possible and reduce size if needed.

A 2 minute screencast on default settings is about 50MB - I’ve yet play with quality settings (I fact I don’t even know what default is  )

Are you running macOS at a scaled resolution?

That’s the only explanation I can think of for blurry screen captures.

I’ve been using Macshot for a few months now as I really like its ability to record the contents of a window as a video. Developer is responsive too! I run the resulting video through ffmpeg defaults go reduce the file size substantially.

I’ll have to experiment with screen resolutions - great suggestion.
