Maps and CarPlay- can you force phone to stay in regular app view?

I recently got a new car, and love that I can now pull up my next appointment location in either Google or Apple Maps on my iPhone (I prefer Google but not married to it) and have it project to my dashboard screen via CarPlay. However, the CarPlay interface doesn’t have all the features that the phone apps do, and I use these more often than I thought. I’d like to be able to grab my phone and access these features but whenever the CarPlay link is active it forces the phone to display ONLY the turn by turn directions. The only way to get back into the main phone app interface is to abort the trip in progress or arrive at the destination. Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent the phone app from becoming a slave to CarPlay? I have spent ages poking around in settings but can’t seem to find this option, maybe I’m just missing it. I don’t care if the same map is visible on both screens at the same time, and could take or leave the turn by turn directions, I just want to access the rest of the main interface from my phone while CarPlay is doing its thing in tandem. Thanks in advance!

I don’t believe that this is possible, but I suspect that’s by design.

The whole point of the CarPlay interface is to simplify and avoid distractions, and remove the need to handle the phone in the car. Far too often accidents are caused by people focusing on their phone rather than driving.

In many countries it’s against the law to handle your phone while you’re driving. In the UK you can get a significant fine and penalty points on your license.
