Brett Terpstra did a soft launch of Marked 3 today:
On macOS $30/year or $70 permanent unlock.
For a markdown previewer/exporter – pretty steep.

I like whatever version I’m using with SetApp (2 I assume) but I can’t imagine paying £30 a year for it.
But it does its job well and is even more helpful in this AI era of lots of markdown files. Assuming 3 is an improvement, could well be handy for some.
By the way I combine it with OpenIn so that when I open a md file I can choose to edit it in MarkedIt or view it Marked. Works really well, better than a split view app imo.
Version 3 is in Setapp now and should be automatically updated – at least mine was… I haven’t tried it out yet though.

Works fine

As a beta tester, I received a 50% discount for the lifetime option, but even €39,99 (the full price is €79,99 in Europe) is still pretty steep… (IMHO)
I wish Brett offered an upgrade price option as well for people who had outright purchased Version 2
Way to steep considering pandoc converts everything. I love IA Writer’s docx to markdown. That’s all I need really. Even Claude will convert docx to markdown, although it does a bad job of it.
A nother thread on subscriptons, is leading me to the conclusion that I may purchase a higher version of AI and get it to code all the apps I need and put the subs into AI. I never use all the apps features and so many are now electron. At least Claude can give me a swift app.
How it started.
How it’s going.

It’s fun, but if it’s important software, you’re committed to support. If not, probably better to find a way to not need it at all, unless you want to build for enjoyment and/or career growth.
Agreed. I bought version 2 less than a month ago and was really a fan but I abandoned it after two weeks and am now using Obsidian instead. My main complaint was that there was no real docking for Marked 2 with BBEdit but I simulated some automatic side-by-side placement logic using Keyboard Maestro with some Applescript. I think it’s a tad overpriced myself (for my purposes) but I’m sure that it’s worth it to the right kind of user who will take advantage of the features. I would have liked the Scrivener feature but I abandoned that program months ago. I had lots of docs in Pages so I like a conversion utility for that but I don’t remember that being part of the feature set - and I’ve converted those manually myself, I’d sill like to have Marked 3 though for the Schema ripping feature. That could be helpful. But, in the absence of a credit for someone like me who just paid for Marked 2, I will likely stay with Marked 2. I knew version 3 was coming (based on the MPU episode) and that show convinced to buy Marked 2 instead. My end goal was to avoid renting software. After the release settles down, I may pursue a version lifetime discount if credit is offered for my recent Marked 2 purchase. While maybe not a panacea for myself,It may end up being that way for others.
Actually, that’s the intro price. Regular price will be $49.99 yearly subscription and $89.99 permanent unlock.
I’m definitely passing on this one, especially with pandoc around.

I like Marked plenty, and since it comes with SetApp I’ll probably continue to use it. But I’d expect the app to include a good markdown editor too at that price. Typora, which is a lovely markdown editor, reader, and importer/exporter app, is $15 for a permanent unlock. (It uses Pandoc under the hood for conversions.) It’s my markdown default when I’m not working in one of my Obsidian vaults.
And you can always ask your bot of choice to write the Pandoc terminal commands for you, which I do often enough if I’ve got a gnarly job to do.
Putting the price in context, you can still buy (lifetime) Marked 2 for $14. So IMHO this is an outrageous price increase. In any case, while I liked it when I was looking at using Markdown, thanks to the MacSparky book, I decided RTF was more to my liking for formatting.
I can’t afford this. But I think it’s worth the price. There’s a lot of squirrely features included that someone like me could use.
I also wonder if MMD Composer and nvUltra are on the way next…
Yes! That and Wiki navigation; Outline, mind map and C/TSV embeds; built-in Markdownifier; and it looks like the Custom Processor features from Marked 2 have been significantly extended.
Thanks for all the input. Regarding price, I’ve put over a year of daily coding into this update and it makes zero sense to release it at the same price as Marked 2. I don’t think $80 for an app as complete as Marked is outrageous, but to each their own. I’ve paid that much for quite a few apps. But the real goal is to get people in at the $4.99/month level, which will provide constant updates to the app and support my development. In the marketplace, $5/month is not outrageous at all.
Thanks to @01001001 for noting that this release goes WAY beyond just Markdown previewing and exporting. More features than I could list here, and there’s almost certainly going to be things that are useful to most users who need anything more than a Markdown preview. But Marked 2 will remain available at the current price for those whose needs are more basic.
Also, for editing, there’s a new Markdown Dingus with live rendering that can save and open files in addition to serving as a scratchpad and tightly integrating with Marked’s previews. I’m not promoting it as a main feature as I have my own designs for a Markdown editor based on Apex that will integrate tightly with Marked, but it’s there and has your basic Markdown editing niceties.
It is when every developer is charging the same or more. It’s simply not sustainable for the customer as a thread on here on subscription fatigue will bear out.
