MBP 16" and Thunderbolt monitor problem

Wondering if anyone has any prolonged success running a new MBP 16" with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor. Supposed to work and does for a while, but sleep mode seems to kill the connection and the TB won’t wake up.

I can reboot the computer to get it to work, but that seems a little too Windows-like for the technology. Being quite new, I couldn’t find anything with Google… hopefully someone here may have some ideas!

Using Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 - 2 adaptor?

I am using the Apple Thunderbolt adapter. Strangely, unplugging it and replugging it in don’t seem to wake the monitor - only rebooting the MBP.
