Took one for the team and can report this Meross HomeKit light switch is awesome. Relatively inexpensive, no hub, easy install and smooth add to HomeKit. Thanks @shanewhately for costing me more $$$.

Weβre redoing our kitchen, so I want to make it smart. However, I have reservations putting X number of more wifi devices on the network. A few, sure, but at larger scale I think Iβd prefer a hub or Thread device.
similar comments here as for Aqara devices. A lot of these companies do offer very innovative and cost effective products. Very attractive for the consumer markets.
Meross is another company with similar background to Aqara.
Generally agree with not clogging up the Wi-Fi network. However, I have so much bandwidth and coverage pouring through the house it really isnβt an issue.
