Microsoft 11 (2023, Copilot) vs macOS Sonoma

This video summary came across my YouTube feed. Microsoft just released Copilot integrated within Windows 11 that can make a table out of a list of a city’s attractions, puts them in a summary table sorting by walking distance. Copilot interpret a math problem with a graph and provides a solution with explanations.

Meanwhile macOS Sonoma gave us widgets on the desktop and live screen savers. Is Apple falling behind?

Microsoft is leading the world in AI, so they have the edge on that for sure. Apple is leading on different fronts Usability, security and UX.
Some industries for sure are lead by Apple, like software engineering, and creative work. And those industries need different AI capabilities that are already available to macOS.
So I wouldn’t say Microsoft is leading and Apple is falling behind, I would have a holistic overview of the OS features not just Copilot. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Copilot coming to office for instance on macOS.

That said, I believe Apple needs to pause for a minute and make a decision related to Siri. Siri is a brick compared to the simplest AI tool in the market, the idea that it doesn’t understand user’s triggers that are part of a very limited set of pre-defined functions, makes me wonder if Apple invests in all in Siri.

I must disagree. I used ChatGPT to get a list of 10 attractions near where I live (note that nothing here is within walking distance, so I didn’t ask for that). I don’t need Microsoft’s AI, nor do I trust it not to do data harvesting of every action I do. Apple is pushing to do everything on your machine rather than from servers, which I appreciate.

FWIW, if you distrust Microsoft enough to not data harvest, then you probably should avoid using ChatGPT too since OpenAI is heavily funded by Microsoft and trains a lot of their models on Microsoft’s servers. To a large extent, ChatGPT is basically “Microsoft AI” at this point.

Yep. But Apple is trying to do AI on device making use of the considerable computational capability of Apple Silicon.

Admittedly, in this particular case, it can never be done locally because it requires a massive database. But I suppose I could have used a fake login and a VPN to access ChatGPT. And if ChatGPT is basically Microsoft AI then I don’t need Windows 11 to access Copilot.

We will see if I get any junk email promoting any of the ten attractions it suggested.

All of that is true, but MS is making a compelling case to everyday people on how they can make people’s work easier. Windows 11 looks nicer than previous versions. And their hardware is so much improved. Meanwhile, Apple is making incremental improvements.

That said, I would double check all of chatGPT’s recommendations.

Can you be behind if you aren’t playing the game? Apple is using AI/machine learning in the development of their products, and are bringing aspects of it to some of their software. But I’ve not read anything about Apple building their own supercomputers.

The services being offered by Microsoft, Google, and others doesn’t run “on device”. It runs on datacenters. AFAIK we will have our choice of these tools because all we need is a browser or a connected app.

Certainly! I’ve gotten plenty of outlandish chatGPT replies. Seemingly it has a good imagination. :grinning:

But I will point out that for its suggested attraction list near where I live all 10 places exist and I personally have been to 8 of them.
