Microsoft Sculpt not detected on startup

Just got a Microsoft Ergonomic Sculpt (5KV-00001), but doesn’t get recognized on startup.

I have to remove the dongle every time I start my MacBook.

Any tips? ideas?

Tried:

  • Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboardtype.plist so I get the Keyboard Setup Assistant again.
  • disabling SIP, following this comment in SO

MacOS Catalina
Have Karabiner Elements

Note:
When detected, in System Preferences is shown as:

with a weird “AE” character after Microsoft

I think that’s Latin for “Microsofts”.
I assume it’s connected directly to the computer? No hubs in between?

I have it connected to a hub (USB->Thunderbolt) since the Sculpt uses a wireless USB dongle, and the MacBook Pro doesn’t have any USB ports.

ran

system_profiler SPUSBDataType

If you can try it with another hub, I would. Personally I think it’s a power management bug in the receiver, and those hardly ever get fixed in software updates :frowning:

Thanks! was thinking the same.
After running the system_profiler SPUSBDataType command, noticed it lists required and available wattage. Will look a powered hub and see if that helps.
