Mindnode Next - where are the files stored?

I love MindNode. I noticed they have introduced a new version MindNode Next. Has anyone tried this ? I am having difficulty importing my old mind maps, and struggling to find out where the files are kept. The documention mentions it is synced with icloud but I cannot find the folder anywhere on my mac. You can’t even do File>Open on the mac app ?

I suppose the two issues I am asking.

  • How do you import your old mind maps ?
  • Where are the files stored ?

I’m experimenting with MindNode Next as well.

I successfully dragged multiple MindNode maps to the MindNode Next icon, and the original MindNode files were copied to MindNode Next. However, I soon realized that creating folders in MindNode Next is not possible. Given the numerous mind maps I create for work and personal use, this limitation makes the new app impractical.

It seems that the primary purpose of the new app is to facilitate collaboration by sharing selected mind maps with others, rather than replacing MindNode “Classic.” While it could be useful in this specific use case, it may not be a suitable replacement for all mind mapping with MindNode.

I’m also a big fan of MindNode and was curious about MindNode Next. I just reached out to them for feedback on this issue. My mind maps are typically linked to specific projects and stored in Finder folders alongside other project materials in various file formats. I’m not excited about the idea of separating their organization. Let’s see what they say.

Yes I have reverted to the classic version again. The nomenclature is a bit misleading Mindnode Classic implies old app, Mindnode Next implies new shiny app. However I think the usecase for Next is a bit niche so most people will stay on classic.

I agree. I do think believe there was an intent to mislead, only poor branding choices.

Thank you for giving MindNode Next a try. I’ll hope I can help clear up some of the confusion our new app has caused.

Files

MindNode Next no longer stores documents as files in iCloud Drive, but directly in CloudKit. CloudKit is the same technology that Apple is using for Freeform, Photos and also iCloud Drive is built using it. As this is a major change, we are releasing it as a new app.

Import

As already mentioned, dragging them onto the App icon is the best way to do this. We didn’t add a File > Open… on purpose right now since we are still missing some MindNode Classic features in Next and believe most existing users will prefer to stay on Classic for now.

Folder

Currently not supported, but definitely something we should do soon…

“Primary Purpose”

Not sure I agree that collaboration is the only purpose, but it’s definitely driving our communication right now as it’s the major new feature that is enabled by our new foundation. The new app is also great if you work on several devices since syncing is now conflict free. And we already have great Shortcuts app support in there that we will expand further in the coming weeks.

I hope this helps better understand what this new app. We always knew that this release will be hard to communicate, so it’s understandable that there are questions. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

@MarkusMS Thanks for the clarification and response! :pray:t2:

Is the intention that MindNode Next will eventually replace MindNode Classic once all of the features have been ported over from MNC?

We hope that MindNode Next will eventually cover all/most use cases our current users have. At the moment we have no clear timeline for this as we are now listening to user feedback and trying to understand where our focus should be. We expect this to be a very slow migration.

Slow is fine. I’ve followed the BSBS principle most of my professional life: Build Slow, Build Solid.

Thank you for your response.
