I am waiting for the arrival of my new MacMini later this week. I need to purchase a monitor. I currently use a late 2013 iMac, non-retina. Although the full resolution of my iMac is 1900 X 1080, I use a resolution 1600 X 900. The Dell monitor that I am considering has a max resolution 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz. Knowing how I use my current monitor, is their any good reason to spend more money and get a 4K monitor- 3840 x 2160?
4k monitor is better as you can then set the resolution to 1080p hidpi for the āretinaā effect. I would not go above 25" for a 4k monitor.
Which Dell monitor are you considering? Thinking about the new Mini but will need a monitor. Looking for something in the 20-23ā range.
The price premium for 4K is not that large these days. Iād look at a 24" 4K monitor like the Dell P2415Q.

@Beresford_Salmon @ChrisUpchurch - you both mentioned ~ 24" 4K. Any issues with 4K at 27"?
I think 24" is the optimal size for a 4K monitor. 27" is really 5K territory.

The 27ā size is very nice for me, and I wouldnāt adhere to any hard and fast rules about what should be 4K-sized, and what should be 5K-sized.
This size and resolution lets me have a PDF open on one side of the screen, and a document or another PDF open on the other side.
I use Magnet to quickly size windows to different halves or thirds of the screen.
This monitor will also allow you to use it with two different computers, if you have the need for that. For instance, you could have your Mini on one side, and a laptop on the other side.
Spot on, people say (see Reddit) that 1080p at 27" looks blurrier/grainer and everything looks too big.
5k for 1440p hidpi is perfect (same as 27" 5k iMac).
1080p is HD (1920x1080), whereas 4K is UHD, and 3840x2160.
So 1080p would probably look bad at 27ā, whereas 4K looks nice. Even 1920x1080 on a 4K monitor looks better, as it is oversampled 4x in hidpi mode.
I heard the same thing (27ā is too big for 4k), but ignored that advice and ended up getting a Dell 27" 4k monitor after all. Iām glad I did. The picture is beautiful and sharp and way better than the previous 27" (also a Dell).

I recently managed to get a 28" Samsung UHD (4K) monitor for 250ā¬ in a flash sale. I couldnāt be happier, the screen is the perfect size for me, and the brightness is 350 nits, so it looks vibrant and bright. The text is nice and crisp and doesnāt look too big (at least for me).
As a bonus, I can also plug in my XBox and play Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza Horizon 4 in glorious 4K!

I use it at work with a 2016 MacBook Pro and love it so much that Iāve just today ordered one to use at home. Iāll be pairing it with a new Mac mini to replace a circa 2012 iMac.

Thanks to all who answered my question. Here is an update on what I purchased. I decided to purchase a 27 inch LG - 27UK600-W IPS LED 4K UHD FreeSync - 3840 x 2160 at a local store. I wanted to buy locally because I wanted to be able to return immediately if I wasnāt satisfied. However, when I got to the store I ended up buying a 27 inch Dell S2719DM - HDR IPS LED QHD - 2560 x 1440. It was about $130 less expensive the LG. Sure, it wasnāt 4K, but I donāt even run this monitor at full resolution, I use a resolution of 2048 X 1152. So for me, this monitor works well. Again, your help is appreciated.
