New iPad: Stage Manager question

I have a question about Stage Manager behaviour: I just received a new M4 iPad Pro and set it up with the “nearby iPad” transfer method, from my 2018 iPad Pro. I have Stage Manager enabled on both. In theory, the new one should behave exactly like the old one, but when I open an app on the new one the app opens in a window rather than in full screen. On the old iPad, apps open in full screen mode by default. Is there a way to get the default full screen behaviour for the new iPad? Both are running iPadOS 17.5.

Do I understand this right:

2018 iPad has Stage Manger ON
2024 iPad has Stage Manager ON

2018 iPad: When you open an app, it opens basically full screen (like it would with Stage Manager off?)

2024 iPad: Opens less than full-window size.

One more question: Do you have the Dock and the Recent Apps ON or OFF?

With all that, I’m not sure there is an answer. When I open an app under Stage Manger it opens, what I would describe is almost full screen. I think there is no mechanism to control what size it opens. I wonder if you turn off the dock and the recent apps if your window will spawn larger when you open it.

Yup, you understand correctly.

Turning off Dock and Recent Apps does not “fix” the issue. It’s not the end of the world but since the behaviour is different for two identically configured iPads, I was wondering what’s causing the difference. My preference is for the behaviour on the 2018 iPad to be the default but I’m not going to lose (much) sleep over it if that’s not possible.

(On the 2024 iPad, if I open an app and then make it full screen from the three dots menu at the top of the window, it retains that for subsequent sessions, so eventually I’ll have the old behaviour for my most used apps anyway)

Are you certain the settings are identical?

You can access Stage Manager even if it’s not set to be the default triggered by the tree dots interface.

I have double checked and I’m certain that both iPads are set to “Stage Manager” there.

For what it’s worth, I set it to Split View & Slide Over on the new iPad and lost the “Add Another Window” option in the three dots menu.
