New version of the Shottr screenshot tool available.
I have been using it for a few years now, and it does everything I need. The developer seems like the kind who should be supported. It can be used as free software with the occasional ask to buy, or a one-time purchase ($12 as of Nov 2025) that gives free updates for life.
I bought it for $9, and today’s email announcing the new version reminded me of how much I like it and that I had wanted to add it to the list of developers I try to send some money to every now and again, so I joined the Friends Club for $30.
my only concern is giving screen recording access to a closed source app. .
ever since I’ve started using Little Snitch, it has surfaced how much apps track us. Every single thing, every min is tracked. Since I can’t use Little Snitch on work computer, can’t provide screen recording access.
I wish macOS had a different permission set for such apps rather than bundling them into screen recording.
I have Shottr (paid) and I’m not sure if I should get the Black Friday deal on Cleanshot X for its video recording and some features I’m missing with Shottr.
How is Shottr doing in terms of managing and archiving your screenshots?
I‘ve been using Cleanshot for two years or so now don’t really like it that much. At the same time, it does the job and I can’t really be bothered looking for alternatives. I think what I mostly miss proper management of all screenshots I take. That part is rather basic, clunky, and slow in CleanShot. The best I‘ve seen regarding that is Snagit, but it has a rather pricey subscription and I think it’s not even a native Mac app…
Edit: As I posted this, my fingers itched to find an alternative. I asked Gemini 3 Deep Research, which has this new thing of creating an elaborate essay-style report from any question, no matter how trivial but it‘s really good. Not 100% accurate, of course (e.g. I believe there isn‘t any Snagit perpetual license available anymore), but still helpful.
It basically gave two alternatives: Shottr + Eagle or ScreenFloat 2. Since the latter is included in Setapp, I‘m trying it right now.
