New to icloud+, now Time Machine doesn't work?

I don’t know if this is by coincidence or design, but my 4TB WD blue bare drive refuses to mount in the Inateck toaster anymore. This seems to have happened since I subscribed to the 2TB icloud+. The disk utility app sees it, but it is greyed out and won’t mount, unlike all other bare drives.

I’m a belt, suspenders, and belt guy, so I have been backing up with TM, CCC, and Backblaze. I just can’t tell if there is a setting somewhere regarding icloud and TM that I’m missing or the HDD just coincidentally doesn’t want to cooperate at the same time I got Photos living in iCloud.

I have just set up Time Machine an M1 MacBookPro running Sequoia using an external SSD. I also have iCloud+, so I am wondering if the problem lies with your docking station.

I’d try and connect the drive via a different cable/enclosure and try a different drive in the toaster to see if you can work out which is having problems.

I doubt very much this is by design.

Well considering how Apple often makes changes that are “better” for everyone, I couldn’t help but think there was some new “auto-backup to icloud” or who knows what. Yeah, I guess that probably doesn’t make sense, but my mind was wandering as the TM drive coincidentally went grey at the same time I signed up for icloud.

As I mentioned, all other bare drives still work fine in the toaster, SSD or HDD, and regardless of which slot. I suppose the drive is alive enough just to be recognized, but not alive enough to mount. ¯_( ツ)_/¯
